Yash B Until the very end of his life, Stanley Kubrick pushed boundaries with filmmaking as an art form. "Eyes Wide Shut" is the final film he made and it is complex and thought-provoking as is his entire filmography. I think this film features many long sequences that are drawn out but engaging. I think Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are both great in this and I found myself wondering where the movie would go next at every turn. I did feel the last section of this movie did drag a bit for me with its slow pace, but I still think it is a very well-made film with plenty of interesting ideas. Overall, it is a wild ride with many unbelievable moments and I think is a solid final outing for Kubrick, even though I wouldn't personally call it one of the acclaimed director's very best films. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Ian E I only watched this as I'd recently seen Jonathan Glazer's masterly Birth (2004), which is often compared with Eyes Wide Shut or cited as being inspired by it. Plus it's Kubrick, so I gave it a go. Whilst appreciation for Birth has grown in the last two decades, Eyes wide Shut feels horribly dated, overblown & pointless. Getting past Tom Cruise in the lead is challenging, considering his body of work and public persona since. Though Pollack and Kidman's performances were some small crumbs of comfort. As a meditation on human sexuality and desire it falls flat, and I'm not sure what the point of it other than that. It's hard to square that the film was made by the same man who masterminded 2001: A Space Odyssey. Watching it made me think of Al Pacino handing out the Best Film at the 2024 Oscars.... Apr 10, 2018 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times This is finally a film that is better at mood than substance, that has its strongest hold on you when it's making the least amount of sense. Dec 14, 2014 Full Review Stephen Hunter Washington Post It's empty of ideas, which is fine, but it's also empty of heat.
