Christine R Depressing show. Entertaining maybe if you were one of the celebrities featured, otherwise a bleak view of the acting industry. At one point Ricky Gervais says to one of the characters, "be funny, you're a comedian". I would say the same to him. This show is just a sad commentary on the acting industry, so mostly suitable for those in it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/22 Full Review Audience Member There is no sharper, more hilarious piece of social commentary on the Hollywood film industry than Extras —— the most undervalued work of Ricky Gervais' career. Iroh's grade: A+ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Ricky Gervais has to be the absolute master of 'awkward comedy' and is able to relate to his audience on a personal level. Extras is a 2 season tv series. In the first season, Gervais plays the character of a background extra being paid next to nothing and is able to break through with a screenplay where he then becomes a 'somebody' in the business during season 2. A very funny series that is smothered in great comedy and is also relatable on a human level at the same time (something Gervais is able to do time and time again). Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Petros T (both seasons) The masters of cringe comedy strike back. Each episode has at least one guest star attracting the attention, and some of these appearances (e.g. Kate Winslet) are brilliant, yet the high point of "Extras" ends up being the recurring characters. The show slowly but surely invests in them, culminating in the excellent special. There may be a couple of weaker (still good) episodes throughout, but the show can be great at combining humour, stupidity, drama, affection and biting social commentary. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Audience Member These kind of humor makes you think about the world. It shows how can one live outside of the expectation of the society. I never laughed so hard on a TV show. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Bridget McManus The Age (Australia) Ricky Gervais has invented a new genre for television. Too awkward to be black comedy, too hysterical to be light drama, too painfully real to be "mockumentary", his work is a disarming form of modern fable. Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Jim Schembri Sydney Morning Herald It's the comedy of awkward moments, of embarrassing pauses, of the wrong thing said at the wrong time, of people being caught out doing things behind somebody's back. It's painful to watch -- and ceaselessly funny. Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Peter Craven The Age (Australia) The wonder is that [Ricky Gervais] has managed to do it again with Extras, exploiting a comparable depth of comedy trickling into pathos and excruciation, but in no sense simply repeating himself. Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation Extras was and indeed remains a quite clear cautionary tale about the lure and subsequent perils of fame. Rated: 4/5 Apr 2, 2022 Full Review Scott D. Pierce Deseret News (Salt Lake City) It's slyly funny stuff that's sometimes laugh-out-loud hilarious. Gervais is still a hoot. Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Roger Catlin Hartford Courant Extras is solid in part because Gervais shares the spotlight with a great comic actress. Mar 5, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
