In July 1947, Henri Betti found himself in Nice, where he intended to meet his father for a game of bridge in the heart of town.
The first nine musical notes of the song came to him as he walked under the arches of the avenue de la Victoire and paused in front of the window of a Scandale lingerie shop: F, E, E, F, G, A, G, F, D. So that he wouldn’t forget them, he immediately wrote them on some music paper.
When the first Nice Jazz Festival was held in February 1948, the publisher offered Suzy Delair the tune to perform. On February 28 at the Hotel Negresco, she sang the song at a jam session called “La Nuit de Nice.” Louis Armstrong was in attendance and very much enjoyed the tune.
Armstrong recorded the song with Sy Oliver and his Orchestra in New York City on June 26, 1950, for the American release. After the album’s release, several of the world’s best vocalists covered the song, making it a global phenomenon.

About the song
Following Roger Seiller’s recommendation at SACEM’s publisher, Paul Beuscher, he presented the song to Yves Montand.
However, Yvest felt “C’est si bon” was not in his style and hence did not perform it. After the song’s editor failed to find a suitable replacement, Henri Betti sang it himself at Nice’s La Réserve restaurant that night.
The publisher Paul Beuscher told Henri Betti in January 1948 that he would give the song a shot with Jacques Hélian and his Orchestra on the radio first. The following month, Jean Marco recorded the album with his vocals.
When he got back to his apartment on 52 rue des Ponchettes, he wrote the tune in under ten minutes. He then travelled to Paris, where he met with lyricist André Hornez at the Hôtel Grand Powers (52 rue François Ier) to brainstorm song titles.
Meaning of C’est si bon
According to André Hornez, the title should have three syllables so that it can be sung along with the first three notes of the song. The lyricist gave Henri Betti a list of ten three-syllable titles the following day, with the final one being C’est si bien.
Henri Betti assured him that was the title he wanted. However, André Hornez reminded him that Charles Trenet had already composed a song titled “C’est bien” for the film Frederica. The word Si, Henri Betti assured him, was the deciding factor.
On August 18, 1947, the song was officially registered with the Society for the Protection of Creative Works (SACEM).
