Why London Film School

At LFS we have nurtured and respected the imagination of our students for over 60 years. We believe it is important to experiment, challenge conventions and explore new modes of storytelling, and to find new ways to connect with audiences. Through this, we are able to set up a dynamic dialogue with the screen industries and to shape and influence the future.

Our staff and visiting lecturers are connected to the film industries, bringing their experiences into the everyday practice of teaching here at LFS. We balance the mastering of technical skills with the creative development of ideas.

Alongside that, you will also engage with the new challenges facing screen storytellers in an ever-changing landscape. We apply that same imagination and experimentation in thinking about new business models and how to develop your career as an independent filmmaker.

Areas of Study

MA Filmmaking

Filmmaking is a collaborative process. To develop our students' unique artistry within the complex process, our students receive a full education in all the filmmaking craft areas on our two-year MA Filmmaking Programme. Students engage in all disciplines, learning to work with fellow students and staff to develop professional level skills. Students leave with a portfolio of directing, cinematography, editing, producing and sound credits on at least 10 films - and often more. Many of these films will tour renowned film festivals. In the past our students have won many prestigious awards including the Cannes Palme d’Or for Best Short Film.

MA Screenwriting

This one-year course focuses on the development of the individual screenwriter’s voice. By the end of this program, students will have completed a full-length feature film script. Throughout the year, students receive feedback and guidance from course tutors and industry professions, providing a superb, hands-on learning experience. To further develop their craft, screenwriting students can collaborate with filmmaking students to create a number of short films. This programme encourages writing as a continuous practice, to stimulate reflective and critical approaches and provides a historical background to film narrative, genres, and dramaturgy.

Studying Film in London - A Truly Immersive Experience

Go almost anywhere in London and you will see signs of a vibrant film industry. The city has so many iconic landmarks that show up in a huge variety of blockbusters. Just think of how often you’ve seen the Tower Bridge or Big Ben or Buckingham Palace on the big screen. And it’s not just the city’s icons that get screen time; the city’s skyline, its atmosphere, its vibrant life, its history, all make London an incredibly attractive setting for a film and setting a mood. Even lowly railway stations can become iconic, think of King’s Cross Station, now a destination spot, due to Harry Potter.
