Ermont

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Val-d'Oise

Ermont is a town in the Val-d'Oise region of Île-de-France, 20 km north-west of Paris.

The city developed on the margin of the forest of Montmorency in the homonymous valley. Inhabited since the Gallo-Roman period, Ermont remains a locality essentially turned towards agriculture and viticulture until the 19th century.

With the rise of railway transport and industrialization, during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Ermont became a communication hub and its urbanization, which began as a residential area, grew.

Demographic growth is spectacular, with the population rising from 9,000 inhabitants after the Second World War to almost 28,000 with the development of communal settlements.

While the historic heart has preserved its authenticity, numerous green spaces and a built heritage of quality, as well as a cultural and associative life animated, make the city a stage of interest.

The only building in the town that was listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments was in 2008, the Esperances Club, a double building designed by the engineer and architect Jean Prouvé, partly built and decorated by Of young people, in the framework of Operation Mille Clubs initiated in 1966 by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Each part of the building consists of spans formed by two half-arcs assembled at the ridge. The aluminum (exterior) and wooden structures are connected by a mezzanine gateway. A discovery of the city's heritage also encompasses the Saint-Flavie church. The saint stands on a stained glass window in the company of Saint Stephen, another patron of the parish. The church dates from 1887, built on the remains of a medieval chapel, and was enlarged after the Second World War.

The Chapel of Cernay (1872), the last vestige of the orphanage Saint-Vincent de Paul, transformed into a cultural space, and the Chapelle des Chênes (1962) are also worth a look.

In terms of civil architecture, one can also notice the town hall, a residential castle built in 1870 by the municipality in 1932, and the old house of Godard, a bourgeois residence built in 1840 that belonged to a family of distillers Specializing in liqueurs based on cherries from Montmorency.

Desiring to maintain its links with its past, the city in 1997 established a museum of arts and folk traditions built in former municipal workshops. Via in particular a remarkable collection of tools dating from Antiquity to our days, its objective is to retrace the evolution of agricultural and viticultural techniques of Ermont. A press was also installed. The lifestyles of the inhabitants of former times are also explained. Guided tours by appointment on +33 1 30 72 37 88.
