  • The Red Devils 'would view the forward as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo'
  • Boss Erik ten Hag is said to admire the Cameroonian's versatility and experience
  • The Bayern Munich hitman is set to become a free agent at the end of the season

Manchester United are 'seriously considering' Bayern Munich's Eric Choupo-Moting as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo next summer.

Choupo-Moting, who has played for both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich since leaving Stoke in 2018, is now reportedly on the radar of another European giant, as his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Cameroonian has broken into Julian Nagelsmann's side in recent weeks, scoring three and assisting two in Bayern Munich's last three league matches against Freiburg, Hoffenheim and Mainz, while netting twice in the DFB-Pokal against Augsburg.

He has also netted three goals in the Champions League so far this season, scoring Bayern's second against Inter on Tuesday. All told, he has scored in each of his last six appearances for the German champions.

According to French outlet Media Foot, Erik ten Hag admires Choupo-Moting's versatility and experience and is very interested by the prospect of luring the striker to Old Trafford next summer.

Ronaldo, who made his fairytale return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021, expressed his desire to exit the club this pre-season in the pursuit of Champions League football.

Although Bayern Munich and Chelsea were linked with the Portuguese superstar, no suitable bids were made and Ronaldo has since had to settle for a regular spot on Ten Hag's bench.

The Dutch coach, who likes his players to press from the front, dropped the 37-year-old after a dismal start to the season and has since managed to elevate Manchester United to fifth spot in the table, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.

During Manchester United's 2-0 victory against Tottenham last month, Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel before the end of the match, presumably demonstrating his frustration at consistently missing out of key matches.

His controversial departure from Old Trafford prompted Ten Hag to axe the veteran from the squad altogether against Chelsea three days later.

The Red Devils manager welcomed Ronaldo back to the starting line-up during United's 3-0 win against Sheriff Tiraspol last Thursday, which brought about the forward's third goal of the season in all competitions.

Subsequently, Ronaldo started back-to-back games for the first time since August against West Ham last weekend.

Choupo-Moting's move to PSG on a free transfer in 2018 raised a few eyebrows amongst fans, as the Cameroonian suffered relegation to the Championship with Stoke in the previous season.

During his disappointing campaign at the Potters, Choupo-Moting netted five goals in 30 appearances, two more than he managed with PSG the following season.

Since his move to the Bundesliga giants in 2020, the 33-year-old has been a regular squad rotation player until this season.

He has no doubt profited from the exit of Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski, who joined Barcelona this summer, and is linking up fruitfully with fellow African Sadio Mane.

Ten Hag's side travel to Spain for their Europa League clash against Real Sociedad on Thursday and must win by two clear goals should they wish to top the group.
