Encanto is an American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and the 60th Disney animated movie. Directed by Jared Bush and Bryon Howard, it was released theatrically on November 24, 2021 and by streaming service on Disney+ on December 24, 2021.

The film has a heavy focus on Latino cultures, especially Colombian culture.

Synopsis

Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super-strength to the power to heal—every child except for Mirabel Madrigal. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Plot

When Alma Madrigal is escaping from terrorists, her husband Pedro Madrigal is slain, but she manages to rescue her children, Julieta Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, and Bruno Madrigal. The candle she was holding at the time was enchanted and blessed by a miracle to make up for the then-future Abuela's loss. Abuela's new house flourishes and thrums with magic. Julieta was given the power to heal through her food at the age of 5, and Pepa could affect the weather due to her emotions. Lastly, Bruno was given the gift - or curse - to predict the future, but everyone thought that Bruno was making the bad predictions happen on purpose, for example, at Pepa and Félix's wedding, he says that it looks like it is about to rain which triggers Pepa and her powers go haywire, making a hurricane". Finally, tired of being criticized, Bruno runs away from home.

Soon, Julieta gives birth to 3 children, Isabela, Luisa, and finally Mirabel. Isabela received the gift to make flowers and other plants, Luisa Madrigal was given the gift of super strength, and Mirabel was not given any gift.

During Antonio Madrigal's gift ceremony, Mirabel sees cracks in the Casita that no one else sees. Abuela pretends not to care about Mirabel's claims, while later in the night she begs Pedro for help, hoping Mirabel was wrong. Abuela asks her husband how to save the miracle, and Mirabel decides that she will save it. She then asks Dolores, Pepa and Félix's only daughter, for help, and she says that she knows nothing about the magic, but that Luisa was nervous about something which could be related to the magic. Mirabel confronts Luisa and her older sister says that she should go to Bruno's tower and that when Mirabel mentioned the cracks and the candle almost going out, she felt weak. Mirabel goes to Bruno's tower, narrowly escaping his vision cave when it starts to fill with sand, and finds the vision. When the Guzmáns come over to make plans for their son Mariano's proposal to Isabela. Mirabel gets caught and everyone learns about the vision.

After that, Mirabel finds Bruno in the walls of Casita and convinces him to have another vision. He sees a butterfly and Mirabel hugging Isabela. Mirabel does what he says hesitantly and the cracks start to disappear and the candle grows brighter. But then, Abuela and Mirabel argue, and the house breaks down. Later, Mirabel runs away and Abuela finds her. Abuela tells her story to Mirabel, telling her she lost sight of who the miracle was supposed to be for, and they hug, and Bruno returns home. With the help of everyone in town, they build the Casita back. Apparently, they all had made a doorknob for Mirabel, and she places it on the door, which brought the magic of the Casita back. The front door manifested a portrait of the whole family together.
