Arrest made after Amesbury woman struck, killed by hit-and-run driver while riding bicycle in Salisbury
A man is facing charges Tuesday in a hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of an Amesbury woman who was struck and killed while riding a bicycle in Salisbury last week.
Rebecca Bartczak, 39, was struck Friday night on Folly Mill Road by a passing pickup truck that was carrying a small camper, police said.
Investigators discovered that the small camper dislodged from the truck after the crash and that the truck had left the scene. The suspect vehicle was found 30 minutes later in Kensington, New Hampshire, by Hampton Falls police.
Bartczak, known as Becky to family and friends, was riding home from work Friday night when police said she was hit by the pick-up truck.
The vehicle crossed the center lane, hit the victim and then kept going.
Deven M. Tanguay, 32, of Tewksbury, was charged with leaving the scene personal injury collision death resulting, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.
The police report said that just ten minutes before allegedly striking the bicyclist, Tanguay hit a parked car in Amesbury, and did not stop.
Police did not find any sign of impairment.
Tanguay was arraigned Tuesday in Newburyport District Court and held without bail until a dangerousness hearing could be held next Wednesday.
Bartczak's family was overcome with emotion in court. "I want him to know that so many people behind her, he needs to pay the price he needs to man up, he was a coward when he ran away," Michael Bartczak, the victim's father said.
