  • Villa have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games across all competitions.

Can Olympiakos make history, or will Villa complete a famous comeback?

After their 4-2 victory in the first leg, Olympiakos are just 90 minutes away from reaching their first-ever major European final.

A hat-trick from the ever-impressive Ayoub El Kaabi and a further strike from Argentinian Santiago Hezze in the Midlands has put the Greek side on the verge of history. With their impressive goal-scoring abilities this season, don’t expect them to sit back. However, they have found the back of the net 16 goals in the knockout stage of the Conference League this season, more than any other team. The 4-2 win at Aston Villa was the third time this season in European competition that the Greek side has scored 4+ goals (twice in the Conference League, once in the Europa League) – the only other time they managed to do so in a single campaign in major competition was in the UEFA Cup in 2008-09.

For Villa, the first-leg loss was the first time they had lost back-to-back games in the Conference League, and they will need to much, much better in the second leg if they have any chance of making the final.  The 2-4 first-leg defeat against Olympiakos was only the second time they had lost the first leg of a knockout tie in a major European competition by multiple goals after losing 1-4 at Royal Antwerp in the first round of the 1975/76 UEFA Cup.

Despite nearly clinching a Champions League spot for next season and setting a new record for points in a 38-game Premier League season, Villa goes into this game without a win in their last three across all competitions (D1 L2) and a shock defeat to Brighton at the weekend that saw them record their lowest xG in a Premier League game under Unai Emery and not have a single shot on target in the game after the sixth minute.

Olympiakos vs Aston Villa match tip

Ayoub El Kaabi & Ollie Watkins Both To Score @ 7/1 with Sky Bet

Both Ollie Watkins and Ayoub El Kaabi found the back of the net in the first leg, with the latter becoming just the second Olympiakos player after Konstantinos Mitroglou to score a hat-trick away from home in a major European competition. The Olympiakos forward is the joint top goalscorer in the competition with eight goals in 2023/24 and is the first-ever player to score 10+ goals in major European competitions for the club in a single campaign (including his three goals in the Europa League).

Ollie Watkins, meanwhile, scored his fifth Conference League goal of the season in the first leg—a joint club record in a single season for Aston Villa, previously achieved by Gary Shaw in the 1982/83 European Cup and by John Deehan in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup.

Aston Villa is an odds-on favourite to win away in Greece, but Olympiakos is a huge favourite to make it to the final. They take a two-goal lead into the second leg. The draw will be enough to see the home side through to their first-ever European final, and it is best priced at 11/4.
