Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School (LREI) Reviews
Rating 4.43 out of 5 42 reviews
Overall, LREI has some amazing teachers, classes, and people. However, there are issues with the administration surrounding prejudice and bullying. A lot of students are entitled and use their parents money to get ahead. Small classes and school spirit are a strongpoint.
The middle school seems to prioritize and accommodate children who are rude and disruptive in the classroom over children who are well-behaved. Those students throw things, bully, threaten, and are rude to the teachers. There is minimal or no discipline or consequences for these disruptive kids. The administration is completely ineffective and goes out of their way to accommodate them under the guise of "progressive education". We pulled our child after a year because she was learning nothing. Send your kids elsewhere if your child is well-behaved and wants to learn. This is a school for disruptive, entitled children who bear no consequences for their actions.
My child had a great experience at Little Red. There is a warm and collaborative environment, his teachers have all been superb and he was equally challenged and supported academically. He loved the sports and the arts programs offered at the school, and he has thrived in college due to the experience he had at Little Red.
I attended The Little Red School House and Elizabeth Irwin in the 50’s and 60’s. I was selected as the SF Teacher of the Year…twice.I am an expert when it comes to evaluating schools.Little Red and Elizabeth Irwin are the BEST SCHOOLS in the Country.
My friend goes to this school and she's a little whack, but overall great character. She really tries. She says "best 6th-grade science teacher, and it was the best class of her life". I am rating based on her dictations.
I loved my time at LREI! The teachers were wonderful and supportive, and the academic programs allowed my to explore my passions inside and outside of class time. The student culture was also superb: there was little competitiveness or ill-will among my peers, with everyone wanting the best for each other socially and academically. I also feel that LREI prepared me well for college, as I am currently having success at a competitive university.
Small liberal school with great arts programs and interesting classes. Teachers care about the students and they have great relationships with students as well. There are lots of resources and support, and an emphasis on building community. Elective classes are on super interesting topics and there is something for everyone.
I attended this school k-12th grade and really enjoyed my time here. The school is not known for its STEM departments but the humanities departments are fantastic. In 11th and 12th grade they have an elective program where students can pick what classes and teachers they want to take and it is an amazing opportunity to take classes in something that interests you.
An amazing choose-your-own-adventure type of school. Really tight-knit community full of supportive falculty and curious, creative students. Genuinely unique in terms of location and history in social justice.
The best! A great place to both grow as a leader and student. The entire community supports you and in any adventure. No dream is too big.
I go there now and love it! I recommend for all types of students! It's a nice environment with nice, supportive people.
LREI is a very warm, close-knit community (especially as a lifer). It's a great pair of schools, with caring faculty and eye-opening curricula. However, there are key differences between the two schools. LRSH (K-8) has much less students per grade, and is generally less diverse. In EI (9-12), students are exposed to more thoughtful political theories. This isn't just due to increase in complexity from secondary to primary education, but a difference in faculty and agendas. The arts at EI are great. The STEM is OK. The humanities are great. The highlight of EI is the college class in 11th and 12th grade. The college office gives so much care and advice to each student. Overall, LREI is a great place to make every student feel important and cared for.
I was a member of the LREI community from K-12 and I enjoyed my experience. I had amazing thoughtful teachers, great advisors who cared not only about my academic standing, but also my emotional well being.
I attended LREI for my entire academic career and am endlessly thankful for its supportive community and the ample opportunities it provided to challenge all aspects of myself. I would not be the person I am today had I not gone to LREI.
I enjoyed the atmosphere at LREI and how the community strived to be accepting as well as welcoming of everyone who attended it. The teachers and faculty are extremely supportive of the students and they take the time to actually listen to students in order to find areas to improve in. LREI is also very thoughtful in the ways in which it engages in topics of social justice and race. It is a very proactive school that aims to dismantle systems of oppression and educate its students on the ways in which they exist within our society. LREI is as much about the individual as it is about the good of the entire community. I only wish that LREI had more students and teachers of color.
will never be worth the money and will not prepare you for college if you're not going to a small liberal arts school
I like that the school is a tight-knit community. The size allows for a smaller student to teacher ratio so we are able to fully engage in classes. The diversity is steadily progressing but I'd like to see it improve, there's always more room for a diverse student body
All three of our children started in the 'fours' at Little Red and went straight through the excellent high school. It's an incredible place - fully immersive academics that stoked the curiosity of each of our kids. The best part about our experience was the true community created by the school's commitment to social justice. It's real.
I love LREI! It fully lets students take part in every aspect of the school experience, from what and when they learn to which parts of the culture they participate in.
My child has flourished at LREI. His ability to synthesize and analyze information and share it with others has increased dramatically, due to excellent teachers and a comprehensive, progressive approach to learning. The community is incredible, warm, welcoming and wonderfully diverse. A really great school.
