Biography

  • Garage rockers from Detroit, US, Electric Six, who found wild success in the United Kingdom with their 2003 hit "Danger! High Voltage."

Beginning life in 1996, the band, led by Dick Valentine (Tyler Spencer, vocals) played regularly at Detroit clubs such as The Old Miami and Gold Dollar. The band split briefly before reuniting in 2001 to record and release their first version of "Danger! High Voltage."

But it was in 2003 where the song achieved huge success, reaching number two in the UK SIngles Chart. Their debut album, "Fire" was released the same peaking at number seven in the UK and number five in the US Dance charts. The song, "Gay Bar" was also another hit, reaching number five in the UK. Their third single "Dance Commander" also entered the top 40 in the UK, making it the third consecutive single to do so.

Following several tours and lineup changes, the band returned with "Señor Smoke" (2005), which featured the controversial cover of Queen's "Radio Ga Ga," with Dick Valentine dressing up as Freddie Mercury's ghost for the video. Electric Six have gone on to release six more albums, not achieving the same chart successes before, releasing them all on Metropolis Records.

Their musical style is a real blurring of genres, mixing disco and synth pop with garage rock, offering a scuzzy, distorted sound with the energy and upbeat vibes of disco. Valentine, the primary songwriter, has said that his influences include Freddie Mercury, Talking Heads, Devo and Captain Beefheart. They are known for their glam-influenced live shows, often providing an incendiary performance through the wild behaviour of the lead singer Valentine.

Live reviews

  • Electric Six

Stop! We are good times! Electric Six describes their live shows perfectly with this line. Whether you're a Certified Crazy or the guy who saw that music video with the kittens 10 years ago, you're going to have an awesome experience. Take equal parts high-energy rock, wonderful stage chemistry, hilarious singer, and glorious chest hair, and you're starting to get an idea of what you're in for.

With nine studio albums under their collective belt, you've got a band who knows how to put on not just an amazing show, but one that will be an entirely different experience from night to night. Their sound has been described in various, often contradictory, terms- rock, dance, techno, funk, punk, metal disco... if you've got a genre, they've got a song for it. Is awesome a genre? It is for these guys. And don't worry, I promise they're still gonna play Gay Bar!

Their US dates usually hit small venues, giving you every chance in the world to go crazy with a bunch of strangers who are going just as crazy. Go! Buy your tickets now! Buy them for yourself, your friends, your lovers, and your cats! Expect awesome music, hilarious banter, and an encore chant of "We want Dick". What more could you ask for?

  • The lyrics are insane. Dick Valentine is certainly insane and a little bit sinister. He maintained the persona right through the show until just before he walked off the stage when he shouted at someone in the audience "You're a fucking idiot!". But maybe that was part of the show? Early on he directed his narrowed eyes at someone else and said, "I see you, fucker." I think that was definitely part of the show. The whole show was energetic, musically tight and it drove the crowd into a frenzy. It was also hilarious. I didn't believe him when he said the floor had been sanitised with a polymer dust so we could sit down, or when he said we should come along to Birmingham because "it don't cost nothing". I don't know if any of the girls from the audience took up his offer of getting into their van and travelling to Birmingham with them overnight. It was great. I loved it. Andy D was pretty amazing too. I saw some things I wish I could unsee...

  • I love these guys. On my iPod. I was really excited to finally see these guys. I'd missed them the last couple of times they played. I was so stoked to see them play last night because I love their cheeky energy. I'm so bummed to have to say that it was the most disappointing show that I've ever been to. Like, the absofuckinlutley most boring shit I've ever sat through. And I've got a 16-year-old daughter that I've been taking to concerts since she was 13. Those were better than last night's show. We left after the less than enthusiastic performance of "Gay Bar," which was only about the 3rd or 4th song in. Even their merch sucked and was stupid over-priced.

In the Whale fucking rocked though! I'd definitely go out of my way to catch these guys if and when they blow back through here.

  • Electric Six I have seen twice in the past few years. The first time I was a casual fan who won free tickets. The second, I was a devoted fan who experienced one of my favorite concerts. I had a blast both nights. I love the creativity, dancy vibes, groove and very versatile style, mixed with funny, clever and chant-inducing lyrics. Dick Valentine, as well, is one of my favorite frontmen, who can captivate and entertain a crowd easily, like few others can. My second show, Valentine had walked off the stage and began singing an E6 song to my wife while he hugged her. That is certainly a very intimate experience that really made our show so much more fantastic and made me love the band so much more.

  • Electric Six were FANTASTIC!! I absolutely LOVED them! Really inspirational and made me really happy. Played old classics as well as new stuff, all brilliant. Mutant Monster supported them and I think they're brilliant too, I'd never heard of them till that night. I bought CDs of both bands. I can't remember the name of the first act that came on before both bands? It was a guy playing an electric double bass and he sung a song about Wetherspoons. Anyway, he was good too. I've been happy every since!

  • I'd never heard of Electric Six and I only went to see 'In the Whale' but what a find. Crsmmed into the tiny Middle Easr Iostairs venue, Electric Six belted out songs in a fantastic concert. The drummer was bad-ass, the lead singer is a character and the keyboard player was wearing swirly glasses like someone out of Devo. The devotees were singing along at full volume and you can tell they adore this group. And now I do as well.

  • Electric Six was as electric as always!

I was glad to see Valentine keeping it real, and putting on a great show with the rest of the E6 crew. They never disappoint.

The Double Door is a shit show...but it's how I like it for such an energetic, high voltage show.

Bring it on again..and until then, i'll see you down at McDonaldz.

  • Electric Six delivered an incredibly 10 for their Soundcontrol gig, cleverly interweaving class tracks like Gay Bar and High Voltage with more recent material like Adam Levine and Horseshit! A packed house loved the 90+ minute set and I will definitely be paying them another visit the next time they play Manchester

  • Awesome show. Very energetic up close and personal. Played new stuff and best of the old. Crowd went mental when they did dance commander, I thought I was transported to a slipknot gig for a moment. Love that venue too. Would go again in a heartbeat.
