Tears of the Kingdom is the biggest open-world version of Hyrule yet. It's full of places to explore and secrets to uncover that can keep players entertained for hundreds of hours. Even with that wealth of content, though, Zelda fans can't help but want more.

In the year since TOTK first released, players have left no stone unturned. After all, there might be a Korok underneath it. That being the case, Zelda fans have been hoping that the Golden Goddesses would bless them with some new content soon, but that still has yet to happen. While series Producer Eiji Aonuma has repeatedly doubled down on the fact that there is no TOTK DLC planned for the future, plans can always change. There are plenty of reasons the Zelda Team should use Recall on that stance and reconsider making the biggest Zelda yet even bigger.

10 TOTK's Depths Have Plenty of Room To Add New Content

Things DLC Could Add to TOTK's Depths:

  • Quests focused on the Zonai or Hyrule's history pre-Calamity.
  • Extra dungeons that rival the main quests in scope.
  • New, or classic, monster types for Link to fight.

One of the biggest areas (both physically and figuratively speaking) of missed opportunity in TOTK is the Depths. Much like the Dark World of A Link to the Past, the Depths present a parallel version of Hyrule's surface, but without much of the charm that ALTTP's Dark World had.

If there were any place in TOTK where adding Downloadable Content would fit seamlessly, it's the Depths. The Depths are just as big as BOTW's overworld, giving the developers a lot of room to add new places of interest to its map through DLC. Much of the Depths is empty space anyway, and the parts that aren't empty still often feel hollow. There is so much untapped gameplay potential in the Depths that DLC could bring out, like the possibility for new mini-dungeons, enigmatic new characters, or unique side quests.

10 Things Breath Of The Wild Actually Did Better Than Tears Of The Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom has cemented its place as one of the best Zelda games, but in many ways, Breath of the Wild still comes out on top.

The feature of Tears of the Kingdom that was put on display the most in the initial trailers was the sky, in particular, the Sky Islands. The Sky Islands made TOTK look like it would truly be a brand-new world to explore, and they definitely added a whole new dynamic to the gameplay in making it more open-air than ever before.

Sadly, there was a lot of missed potential in TOTK's Sky Islands that partially stemmed from there just not being enough of them. There's more than enough space in the sky for DLC to add entirely new Sky Islands that could even rival the size of the Great Sky Island where players complete the tutorial in TOTK.

A Sequel Set in TOTK's Hyrule Would Disappoint Fans, But There's Plenty More to Discover There

"My friends... with all your strength... stand with me!"

- Princess Zelda

TOTK was a great end to Link and Princess Zelda's tale that began in BOTW, but there were still plot threads left open. Chief among them are the details of the past timeline, and especially the Ancient Sages and the Zonai in the past. Even in the present, though, there's more that could be explored in TOTK's narrative through DLC.

Princess Zelda tells Link and the remaining Sages in the game's final cutscene "my friends… with all your strength… stand with me!" This doesn't paint the picture that things will be peaceful in the future, but rather that the Sages and Link will fight to protect the kingdom of Hyrule no matter what evil arises. This sets things up for a new adventure, whether that be in a sequel or simply in DLC.
