Shilarze Saha Roy The stakes were high as AEK Athens aimed to achieve a historic feat — a first domestic double since 1978 — on May 24, 2023. They had already clinched the 2022-23 Super League Greece 1 title and were facing PAOK in the 2022-23 Greek Cup final. However, they were dealt a crucial blow when defender Lazaros Rota was sent off in the sixth minute of the match. With 84 minutes to play with 10 men, they faced a stiff challenge. But, spearheaded by Iran captain and full-back Ehsan Hajsafi, AEK Athens did not concede a goal and notched up a convincing 2-0 victory. The 33-year-old Ehsan Hajsafi executed his duties with precision and tenacity and his interceptions were as swift as the wind. The way he orchestrated the defensive line snuffed out any glimmer of hope PAOK dared to conjure. In fact, ever since Hajsafi joined AEK Athens, his commanding presence at the back has become the bedrock of AEK Athens’ defence.

AEK Athens stood tall on May 24, refusing to yield to the pressure. And when the final whistle echoed through the Panthessaliko Stadium, they clinched their first domestic double in over four decades. For Hajsafi, it was a moment of celebration too. His tireless efforts and determination propelled AEK Athens to their 16th Greek Cup and 13 Super League triumphs. But Hajsafi’s journey to this moment of glory was far from ordinary. He emerged from humble beginnings, a young talent with dreams of making it big. From his early days at Iranian club Zob Ahan in 2000, he honed his skills before experiencing a breakthrough when he joined the renowned Iranian club Sepahan in 2006. There, his star soared, and he played an instrumental role in Sepahan’s run to the 2007 AFC Champions League final. Additionally, he had the opportunity to compete in the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup while playing for Sepahan. During that period, Hajsafi predominantly played in midfield, taking set pieces for the team and showcasing his goal-scoring abilities. However, in the 2009-2010 season, he transitioned to the left-back position, where he has since excelled. Over the years, he has established himself as a versatile player, capable of performing in various positions such as winger, left-back, or defensive midfielder. His adaptability and exceptional skills have made him one of the most sought-after players in Asia.

Hajsafi’s talent attracted attention from various clubs, and in June 2011, he signed a loan contract with Tractor. He returned to Sepahan in January 2012, securing the Hazfi Cup with the team and extending his contract for another two seasons. In August 2014, Hajsafi came close to joining Championship side Fulham, but the deal fell through due to work permit issues. Consequently, he extended his contract with Sepahan for an additional two seasons. Later, in 2015, Hajsafi joined FSV Frankfurt in Bundesliga 2, where he delivered memorable performances, including a remarkable goal from 50 yards against SC Freiburg on March 13, 2016. He then went on to represent Greek clubs Panionios FC (2017-18) and Olympiacos (2018) before settling with AEK Athens in 2021. Hajsafi’s international career has been equally impressive. He has represented Iran in several prestigious tournaments too, including the FIFA World Cups of 2014 and 2018, as well as the AFC Asian Cup tournaments of 2011, 2015, and 2019 ever since he made his senior national team debut on May 25, 2008, in a friendly match against Zambia. In March 2014, he was honoured with the captain’s armband for the first time in his 57th appearance for the national team, in a match against Kuwait. Moreover, on November 15, 2018, at the age of 28, Hajsafi celebrated his 100th international game in Azadi Stadium against Trinidad and Tobago, a testament to his longevity and commitment to his country. Hajsafi’s journey in football so far has been filled with remarkable achievements and unforgettable moments. With his versatility, skill, and leadership, he continues to make a significant impact on both the club and international stages, cementing his status as one of Asia’s most talented footballers.
