Edward Francis Blewitt (January 2, 1859 – May 26, 1926) was an American civil engineer, businessman, and politician who served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 22nd district from 1907 to 1910. He is the maternal great-grandfather of Joe Biden, 47th Vice President of the United States.[1]
"EDWARD FRANCIS BLEWITT, Lackawanna County, was born In New Orleans, La., January 2, 1859; educated at Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., and was graduated therefrom as a civil engineer in the class of 1870, of which class he is now president; was city engineer of Scranton, Pa., 1883 to 1803, and served as school controller for a term ending 1884; is a contracting and consulting engineer and was chief engineer from 1807 to 1902 of the Guadajara City, State of Jalisco, Mexico, sewer and water works, costing $3,000,000, the most complete in that country; elected to the Senate In November, 1906."[2]

In 1860, Patrick Bluitt, a 27 year old surveyor b. Ireland, lived with his wife Catharine, 22 b. Ireland, and son Edward, 1 b. Pennsylvania. Marey Farrell, 10 b. Pennsylvannia, is living with the family.[3]
1870 US Federal Census Scranton Ward 2, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
In 1870, Patrick Blewett, a 40 year old civil engineer b. Ireland, lived with his wife Kate, 35 b. Ireland, and six children b. Pennsylvania: Edward, 11; Honora, 9; Julia, 6; Anne, 4; and Geneveive, 2. Also living with the family were: Terresa Ferrill, 17 b. Pennsylvania; John Ferrill, a 25 year old carpenter b. Ireland; and Mary Ferril, 23 b. Pennsylvania. (The name Ferrill has been indexed at Terrell, but it looks like Ferrill on the actual enumeration.)[4]

According to the biography in Smull's, Edward was chief engineer from 1897 to 1902 of the Guadalajara City, State of Jalisco, Mexico, sewer and water works.[5]

In 1910, Edward F. Blewitt was a widowed 49 year old civil engineer b. Louisiana. He lived in a home he owned at 1702 Monroe Ave. with six others b. Pennsylvania: daughter Gertrude M., 27; son Patrick R., 26, a civil engineer; son Arthur J., 24, a civil engineer; son-in-law Ambrose Finnegan, 25, a civil engineer; daughter Geraldine C. Finegan, 23; and grandson Gerard J.Finnegan, 0-1/12. Edward was married for 28 years. Ambrose and Geraldine have been married for less than 1 year. Edward's parents were both born in Ireland.[6]

In 1920, Ambrose J. Finnegan, 35 b. Ireland, worked as an advertising solicitor for a newspaper. He lived in a place he rented at 1209 Woodlawn St. with his wife Geraldine, 33 b. Louisiana, and four children b. Pennsylvania: Gerard, 9; Edward, 7; Ambrose, 5; and Eugenia, 2-6/12. Father-in-law Edward Blewitt, 61 b. Louisiana, a civil and mining engineer in a coal mine, and Gertrude Blewitt, 39 b. Pennsylvania, lived with the family. Gertrude is single, but Edward says he is married, even though no wife if shown. [7]
