I was going to rate this three stars and decided on four once I categorized it as a kids/teens movie. The fight scenes are not bad, the acting is mostly fine despite few hammy amateurish scenes where the director (thinking like a 13 year old in a school play) obviously thought "Well they are excited, and excited barbarians always shout in each other faces at the top of their lungs," or "happy people always cheer in perfect unison and raise their hands in perfect unison." Not too bad though.

The film opens with the "Pagan" people dancing in a meadow, wearing white dresses, flowers in their hair holding hands etc. It soon moves to a scene where the Catholic Pope knifes a man to death in the Vatican, so, yeah, you have to be willing to tolerate so degree of politicized religion bashing to enjoy the film. Not bad as escapist entertainment, it would have been better without the blatant propaganda.

Before I watched this film, I had no real appreciation of the significance of the Namejs bracelet handed down through my family since my great-grandfather. Now, it is as glued to my wrist as my wedding ring is to my hand. The peoples of the Baltic were the last in Europe to be subjugated by the Catholic or Orthodox churches--and this movie does a good job of showing how/why. The love story was a nice addition and gave the film more depth. The vows used in the wedding are a reasonable interpretation from the Latvian Dainas (ancient Latvian lyrical poetry upon which their native Dievturība religion is based). While I loved this film because it helped me connect with my own heritage, others will love it for its story based on "live free or die"--a sentiment well known (but often forgotten) by Americans.

Writing was decent, not great. Acting was quite cheesy. Fight scenes were pretty decent but even they had some cheesy scenes in them. Plot was somewhat decent, seemed like a generic "I hate Christians" kind of story really. Overall decent watch but nothing special.

Every land was invaded and either conquered or they fought back. Every land had their destiny defined on a battlefield. Movies like this are needed to give people a sense of history and an understanding how the world of today developed. Rewriting history, maligning the winners or glorifying the losers based on prevalent political narratives and conveniences is ludicrous. You are responsible for your own future. Win or lose you accept your fate, learn from it and become better people. The final words of this movie are inspirational. Movies like this should be watched by everyone as historical lessons (forget accuracy). Personal courage, personal responsibility, and stand for yourself rather than blaming others for your weaknesses are great lessons to take from this movie. Hollywood can no longer make movies like this. Great action movie. Very well done, given the limited budget. They get a pass for that. I just did not understand the meaning of the snake in the swamp. What was the point? It was in a dream, so what did I miss?
Absolutely worth watching.

I know that the Vikings were known for their fierceness in battle and this movie has a lot of that. Altho a lot of blood, the scenes were very realistic. The acting was good, the scenery beautiful, and a good story. This movie kept my interest and now I want to know more about this particular battle and time. I am hoping that the movie was based more on truth and less on myth. Love those Shield Maidens. Yes, Viking women fought in battles.

Not going to judge this by any historical accuracy, as it 'felt' a bit made up.
That said the acting is fine, the plot's okay, the set-piece combat is very good, so the overall effect is basically pleasing.
Character devlopment is pretty weak, and this is definately a 'boys film'. MInd you, the period it is set in was pretty much male dominated.
Generally two things guarentee a good film for me: a vampire and an eploding helicopter. This film has neither, but is still pretty good fun.
