Hmm...Shaw defiantly gave Styx a rockier edge and more down to earth songwriting, but he's a good guitarist. Not a Fripp, but he's good.

This looks like a young Peter Gabriel's face superimposed over some blonde girl's head, but it's Tommy Shaw!

a great addition to Styx 40 years ago. his songs back then were awesome.
i think his writing went down hill in the 80's. a let down for Styx albums at the time.
he's a great guitarist (especially acoustic) and still a great singer.

Big Styx fan here. I think Tommy Shaw is an excellent guitarist. I saw him live a few years ago and his vocals were crystal clear.

I have seen Shaw many times with Styx and twice with Damn Yankees and he is quite good. In both bands he was always kind of the 2nd lead guitarist (behind James Young in Styx and Ted Nugent in Damn Yankees), but Shaw could hold his own pretty well with both of them. As others have mentioned his vocals are still amazing. I saw Styx a little over a year ago and I think his voice is even better today than when he was younger. A very underrated vocalist IMO.

I was under the impression JY was the second banana lead guitarist. It seemed that way in the The Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight concert video.

And yes, his lead vocals are pretty awesome.

Good point. I think Shaw has taken on more lead guitar duties over the years than he used to. The last time I saw them I remember his solo at the end of “Man In The Wilderness” being particularly impressive.

I dunno, they guy made bank with his skills so he can't be that underrated. He doesn't get much mention here, but then he's known more for ballads and stadium rock than prog.

Always liked the multi-talented Tommy Shaw. Added at ton to that band. From videos Ive seen, he's still great today.

I always thought TS brought more interesting things (including his guitar playing) to Styx' music than JY did, but that's just my personal view.

I enjoy Tommy Shaw in Styx, solo, Damn Yankees,, and Shaw/Blades. My favorite solo album of his is one that often turns up on the bottom of others' lists: Girls With Guns. I have the (now a collector's item) CD of Girls With Guns, but I need to grab the 2015 import of Girls With Guns/What If 2CD remastered edition

My first rock concert was Tommy Shaw opening for Billy Squire, when Tommy was promoting Girls With Guns. I was just a sprout.

If most people here (myself included) consider him a great guitarist and he has had great success, then he can't be underrated.
