Amazon Claims 'Coming 2 America' Drew The Most Opening Weekend Viewers of Any Movie During the Pandemic
Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America sequel is reportedly coming to streaming. According to Deadline, Paramount and Amazon are currently negotiating a deal that would shift the sequel, aptly titled Coming 2 America, from a traditional theatrical to a streaming release on Prime Video. Sources close to the situation reveal that the deal is in the $125 million range, and if that massive figure is agreed upon, the film could debut as early as December 18.
Coming 2 America was originally slated for a holiday-time release, but continued cinema closures and low box office grosses for tentpole films like Tenet have made studios nervous to pursue that route. Instead, Deadline reports, Paramount is attempting to recoup some of the film’s budget by pursuing a streaming strategy, as other studios have done for films like Mulan, Trolls World Tour, and the Borat sequel, which will debut on Amazon Prime Video October 23.
According to Variety, the deal between Amazon and Paramount is not yet final, as Murphy must approve the transition to streaming. However, the deal is reportedly a top priority for Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke, who has beefed up the streamer’s film slate over the past few months with the acquisition of Michael B. Jordan’s Without Remorse, Regina King’s One Night in Miami, and other films affected by COVID-19.
Murphy’s Coming to America sequel was first announced in January 2019. The sequel will see the actor and comedian reprise his role as Akeem, an African prince who, in the original 1988 comedy, travels to Queens to find a wife. In Coming 2 America, Akeem learns that he has a long-lost son, and he returns to America to meet him.
In addition to Murphy, who also serves as a producer on the sequel, Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, John Amos, and James Earl Jones are set to reprise their original roles. Coming 2 America also features appearances from Jermaine Fowler, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, and Wesley Snipes.
