Going into the 2022 college football season, Tar Heels Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the North Carolina roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Mack Brown this season.
Ed Montilus comes into the 2022 season as a band-aid to UNC’s offensive line struggles from the year prior. Despite appearing in all 13 games last season, Montilus goes into his senior year with expectations of more playing time after starting only one game the previous season.
The 315 pound offensive lineman played a relief role last season, getting plugged in periodically to help a struggling offensive line. Now that relief role has turned into a starter spot after losing three offensive lineman to the NFL. Montilus is in for a make it or break it type year.
Looking ahead, Montilus is expected to help lead the offensive line alongside senior Asim Richards. An uptick in play is not new territory for Montilus, who started 14 games out of 22 in his first two seasons with UNC. Last year the offensive line took big blows of criticism after allowing a dreadful 49 sacks on the season, including giving up four in the Duke Mayo Bowl 31-28 loss.

Depth Chart Overview
As it stands, the three-star Florida native will spend a majority of his time at the left guard position. Much like last season, UNC’s offensive line is filled with experience in hopes of a smooth transition from the Sam Howell led offense.
It’s still up in the air on whether it will be Jacolby Criswell or Drake Maye under center, but regardless who leads the huddle for UNC it will fall on the shoulder pads of Montilus and others to not repeat the disaster of last season.
