Summary

  • The ending of Echoes leaves viewers with more questions than answers, as the series' narrative is intentionally unreliable.
  • The identity of the woman with Charlie at the end of the series is left open to speculation, but it is likely to be Gina based on visual and textual clues.
  • Echoes explores the strained relationship between Leni and Gina, with Leni being the mastermind behind their twin switching scheme and causing the death of Gina's love interest, Dylan.

There were plenty of twists and turns leading up to the Echoes ending, but there still remained a lot of unanswered questions after the Netflix miniseries had concluded. Echoes offers a unique spin on the good-twin-evil-twin trope. Though the ending of Echoes resolves much of the tension created by its plot, the unreliability of the series’ narrative means that viewers are left with more questions than answers. Echoes follows the story of Leni and Gina (both played by Michelle Monaghan), twins who have created chaos in the lives of their loved ones by switching places with each other.

Though swapping their identities was meant to benefit them, neither truly got what they wanted in the end. Echoes set up a lot of mysteries, but these were not all satisfactorily resolved, which surrounds the ending of Echoes in an air of ambiguity. Leni’s family implodes as her marriage ends, while Gina loses her opportunity to start a new life with her high school sweetheart, Dylan, when he is mysteriously murdered. Leni and Gina reveal their true feelings toward one another, ultimately leading to the latter's suicide. However, there is evidence that Gina does not actually die, creating unanswered questions surrounding the Echoes ending.

Is Leni Or Gina With Charlie At The End Of Echoes?

Clues Hint At The Truth Despite The Intended Ambiguity

Even after the twins’ schemes become public knowledge, there is still some doubt over who is who, especially during the show’s last scenes with Charlie. The Echoes ending reveals that Charlie wrote a book about his experience with the twins. During an event to promote the book's release, a woman in a hat and sunglasses who is clearly one of the twins asks Charlie what happened to Gina’s body after she threw herself off the waterfall.

Afterward, in the final scene of the miniseries, Charlie is visited by one of the sisters at his home, and he assumes she is the same one who attended the book reading given that Gina is supposedly dead. Yet, she tells him she has been waiting for him for over an hour, indicating she was not at the bookstore. Echoes ends with Charlie, and the audience, wondering who is actually with him, Leni or Gina.

While it's left unclear which twin is with Charlie, she is most likely Gina, while Leni is the woman at the reading. Earlier in the series, Leni is shown changing her appearance, and so it makes sense for her to be the woman in the more elaborate disguise at the bookstore. Plus, Gina would have no reason to ask what happened to her own body. There are also clues that Gina is with Charlie at the end, both visually and textually. The woman with Charlie is wearing clothes and makeup that are more in line with Gina’s appearance.

When Charlie tells her that he will figure out which twin she is, she replies, “Maybe. Maybe I don’t even know anymore,” which echoes a similar line that Gina says earlier in the series when she is being interrogated by Sheriff Floss (Karen Robinson). She also tells Charlie she has unfinished business with him, which makes more sense for Gina, as his last conversation with Leni feels final. Still, although there are signs pointing to which twin appears at the end of Echoes, the show purposely leaves the woman’s identity open for speculation.

Why Leni Wanted To Switch Places With Gina (As Kids & Adults)

Gina Was Blamed For The Acts Of Leni But Still Agreed To The Switches

Although both Leni and Gina participated in switching places with each other throughout their lives, the scheme was ultimately Leni’s idea. During their childhood, Leni wanted to swap with Gina in order to protect her after seeing what happened to their mother. Despite this motive, trading places more often seemed to benefit Leni, with Gina being labeled “Bad Gina” for acts Leni committed while they were switched, such as pushing Claudia.

As an adult, Leni felt strained from the pressures of marriage and new motherhood and wanted to switch places with Gina in order to give them both an escape. This equally benefited Gina, who got to experience motherhood while posing as Leni after she had suffered a miscarriage. While posing as Leni, Gina was also able to reconnect with her former love, Dylan James (Jonathan Tucker), which set the events of the Echoes ending into motion.

The Church Fire Explained: Why Leni Lit The Fire

Leni Ensured Dylan Would Be Blamed

One of the biggest mysteries in the Echoes ending is what happened at the church fire when Gina and Leni were teenagers. The public believed Dylan started the fire given that he left town after the incident, but Leni was later revealed to be guilty of the crime, as there was a lion charm — her symbol — found at the scene. Though the truth remained unknown for years, Dylan tells Gina that after the fire, Leni told him the police believed he and Gina were the ones responsible.

Therefore, as suggested by Leni, he needed to flee town in order to deflect attention from Gina. According to Dylan, Leni was jealous that Gina was beginning to create a life with him that did not involve her. Leni started the fire, as is affirmed at the end of the hit Netflix show, and then she lied to Dylan in order to separate him and Gina so that Leni could have her sister all to herself again.

When Gina reconnects with Dylan, she again distances herself from Leni, which Leni hates. Gina and Dylan make plans to run away together after the twins' birthday party. Leni, pretending to be Gina, calls Dylan and switches where they are to meet. Gina immediately knows Leni is responsible for the change in plans and rushes to find Dylan, but she's too late. He dies from his stab wounds en route to the hospital. In the Echoes ending, Gina confronts Leni about Dylan’s murder. She claims he was dangerous and killed him in self-defense, but it was because she could not stand Gina having happiness apart from her.

Will Echoes Season 2 Happen?

No Announcements Have Been Made About Continuing The Story

The twins and Dylan standing outside in Echoes

Though Echoes Netflix series ending saw a cliffhanger, Echoes season 2 will probably not happen. The streamer labels Echoes as a limited series, meaning its seven episodes are meant to serve as a complete story. While there is potential to continue the story based on how the first season ends, Echoes season 2 has not yet been announced, and it's unlikely that it ever will be. However, the cast and crew of the series have spoken out to TheWrap (via Newsweek) about the possibility of a sophomore installment and revealed a few secrets along the way.

Michelle Monaghan herself revealed that it was Gina who was present at Charlie's book reading as well as the fact that Leni was the one present with Charlie at the end. Co-showrunner Brian Yorkey also confirmed in the interview that there are several story possibilities available for Echoes season 2, but the audience is ultimately the deciding factor in whether or not it happens. Yorkey stated that season 2 could explore how the twins cope without Matilda, and has even envisioned a spinoff series for Floss. Though there's nothing in development, it seems Yorkey has plenty of ideas for a second season, and his full quote can be read below.

Netflix and the audience will decide whether the show wants another season. I love the story as we told it. I also—Quinton and I have all sorts of— we've been pitching each other Season 2 since even before we started choosing shooting Season 1 because these women are fascinating and this situation is super tangled.

Echoes Had A Rocky Development Journey

Vanessa Gazy's Idea Began A Decade Ago

The Echoes ending showed the hard road these women chose, but apparently, nothing was harder than getting the series off the ground. Creator Vanessa Gazy (Eden) had a difficult time when it came to developing the miniseries with the idea for Echoes first being formed by Gazy in 2014 when she was a film student at the Bundanon Trust Artist-In-Residence Program. The story for Echoes started as a single-page outline which was brought to Screen Australia and Endemol Shine Australia’s Smart like a Girl: ROAR writing initiative later in 2017.

Gazy was assisted by producer Imogen Banks and screenwriter Alice Bell in workshopping the pilot episode, which was then taken to LA and pitched to Netflix, who wanted to develop the idea further. The idea went through numerous executives before finally landing with Quentin Peeples and Brian Yorkey as showrunners in 2020. It was then that Gazy was brought to an American writers' room for the first time, where she had to stand up for many of her own ideas which could've gotten scrapped. Making a television series isn't easy, and Vanessa Gazy had to go through a lot to make sure that Echoes got made.
