I cycled to the top from the English drive entrance on the south side of the park. The road is closed to traffic so it was lovely to go through the woods all the way to the top. I only passed a walker and a couple of joggers this way and it was so deserted, quiet, and peaceful. Once at the top there is a pretty landscaped park area and a great view over New Haven. The base of a pavilion built in 1800's is still there. It had a restaurant over a hundred years ago and it would be nice if something was built on it again.

This place is a very good place to end a tiring week at work, I was heading to NYC using the train and ended up there :)

Parking spots are limited (cars are no longer allowed up there) due to a single garage down the hill. And you take a looooong hike up there with beautiful scenery and amazing bird voices.

The best part of this place is the hike itself, you will see New Haven from different parts while going uphill and amazing trees during your way and the amazing rock structure of the hill itself.

Take care of young boys with skateboards cause they love to go up then go down the hill very fast, keep your ears open cause you will hear them before you see them :)

Once you go up there you will feel good specially after a long hike. Take a moment to enjoy the scene from up there, then few minutes reading how this part is created and following the signs for the different places you can see from there.

Uphill there are several places that you can sit there with your family and enjoy a picnic and also there are some places that you can rent for parties with phone number o them.

I live just a couple miles from this park, so I go occasionally for the view and pleasant atmosphere. And it feels safe here, unlike West Rock Park which has thug-like persons hanging out.

Multiple ways up by foot, bike, or car. At the top there is plenty of grass for a picnic, with gorgeous views over New Haven. The Soldiers and Sailors monument is at the top as well. A great local spot for those in New Haven!

We took a drive up to East Rock on a sunny, cool, spring day.
Convenient to the city but a whole different world. Lovely views, great hiking trail options, ample places for picnics, lounging, etc. and interesting history.

Whenever I am hosting a visitor to New Haven, I make sure (weather and season permitting) to bring them right to the top of the Rock. Here they will get a spectacular view of the entire city below, as well as New Haven Harbor, Long Island Sound, and Long island on the horizon. For the slightly intrepid, there is a short hike from the bottom, which gets a little steep towards the end on the Giant's Staircase; despite the impressive appearance of the cliff face from below, it only takes 12 minutes to do this walk. In the warmer months and all year on weekends you can also drive (or bike-ride) to the top from a different access point. Then there are very pleasant trails all over the terrain of this geologic marvel (whose twin ridge on the other side of New Haven, West Rock, can be seen from the top), both in woods and along the cliffside overlooking the Mill River below and with various wonderful views in the distance, including the famous Sleeping Giant north in Hamden. Meanwhile, down below is a lovely urban park, complete with Nature Center, stairways to the Mill River gorge below, and several foresty trails (mindblowing in the fall) all along the river.

Amazing view. We brought food and ate at the top. Nice Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. Free so it is family and budget friendly. Lots of grassy areas and places to explore.

We're back! We returned in warmer weather as we had said we wanted to do. It was a clearer view, and it had a different feel. There were more people, but not as many as I was expecting for Memorial Day Weekend. There were a decent amount of joggers, bikers, hikers, and walkers. Some people were grilling out, and it's a dog friendly park. There are benches, picnic tables, grills, and even a gazebo in ERP. There's a sign board up top that shows the important places of the city of New Haven below. There's also a Soldiers & Sailors monument up top that's pretty neat. Our GPS did not take us exactly where we needed to be, but we followed the tall monument we could see from the road to the park. Not sure if I liked the Fall or this better, but it was nice both times we went.

East Rock Park has one of the best views of New Haven and Long Island Sound. Plus you can climb either up or down the hillside with iron handrails or hike on lower ground. A fantastic place to chill and enjoy the view.

Great variety of things to do: trail hiking up to memorial, general trails throughout the park, options for dogs in the river and off leash, The park is also nicely located off Orange street with an opportunity to end your hike at one of the great gourmet groceries.
