Boilermakers Blanked by Penn State in East Lansing

4/10/2021 2:16:00 PM | Baseball

EAST LANSING, Mich. Calvin Schapira matched his season high with seven strikeouts while pitching into the seventh inning, but Purdue baseball was shut out for the fourth time this season in an 11-0 loss to Penn State on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (8-12) pounded out 17 hits while ending the Boilermakers' five-game win streak in the head-to-head series. It was a 3-0 game entering the top of the seventh before PSU scored eight times over the final three frames. The Purdue bullpen has been charged with 13 runs over its last 4 2/3 innings dating back to Sunday's rubber game loss to Iowa.

Schapira (0-3) was in position to post his third consecutive quality start. But Penn State opened the seventh inning with consecutive singles and both runners came around to score. The lefty pitched into the seventh for the second time this season. He did not issue a walk and his seven Ks were a big reason why the Boilermakers (4-14) racked up 12 strikeouts, posting a double-figure total for the seventh time this year.

Kyle Virbitsky (1-2) put together his finest outing of the season for Penn State, limiting Purdue to five singles over 8 1/3 innings. He also did not walk a batter while striking out six. The six through nine portion of the Boilermakers' lineup was 0-for-12 against the right-hander.

Ryan Howe made the top defensive play of the day, a diving stop behind the second base bag to take away a one-out single. He flipped to Justin Walker Jr. at second to retire the lead runners. It kept PSU from having runners on the corners, but the Nittany Lions still scored the game's first run later in the frame.

Skyler Hunter singled to lead off the first and sixth innings, recording his 69th career multi-hit game and moving into eighth place in program history with 234 career hits. The switch-hitter has hit safely in five straight games.

Tyler Powers singled in his final at-bat to extend his career-long reached base safely streak to 12 consecutive games, the longest on the team this season. Powers also made a nice play defensively when he third baseman pounced on a sac bunt attempt and retired the lead run at third base for the first out of the seventh inning.

Ben Nisle's single in the fourth inning extended his reached safely streak to seven straight games. Miles Simington was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning and is also riding a seven-game reached safely streak.

Purdue was 1-for-12 with runners on base and 1-for-10 with two outs. Penn State recorded seven of its 17 hits with two outs.

The Boilermakers are scheduled to play a doubleheader Sunday, taking on Penn State at noon and Michigan State at 4 p.m. ET.
