  • West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth. The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

  • Mountain Area
The mountain area in Tainan has a variety of geological features ranging from forests at low altitude to the barren land of chalk soil. Mountain trails wind through mountain peaks. When it is sunny, the landscape of the coastline of western Tainan can be seen from the mountains. Yujing is famous for mangoes. A lot of tourists come here to enjoy the delicious Irwin mango shaved ice from June to August. In spring and summer, the nights at Meiling in Nanci District see a bustle of fireflies throughout the valley, whereas in winter, a scattering of white plum blossoms intersperse among Meiling. Tasting plum chicken soup while appreciating a sea of clouds here is a great luxury. Situated in Nanhua, which has a myriad of secret destinations, is a guesthouse “Breezy Village” that is similar to the scene in the movie “Spirited Away.” What is more, when you walk into the Vajrayana Padma Wod Ling (Tibetan meditation centre), you would think you were in Tibet. Wandering on the highway along Nanhua Reservoir gives you an opportunity to appreciate the grand view of natural valley and mirror-like water surface. The most mind-blowing sunrise over a sea of clouds can only be appreciated in Erliao in Zuojhen. Everyday thousands of visitors and photography lovers come here just to see it. The landform of chalk soil also renders Zuojhen the name of Moon World.

  • Southwest Coast National Scenic Area
Southwest Coast National Scenic Area starts from Yunlin on the north all the way to Tainan’s Yanshuei River on the south and borders Taiwan Provincial Highway 17on the east. The long strip of land enriches the possibilities for leisure activities of all kinds. The recreation in Yunlin and Chiayi focuses more on the scenery of offshore sandbanks, fishing ports, and temple culture, whereas that in Tainan places emphasis on the view of lagoons, migratory birds, and salt pans. There are two famous art installations, one of which is Crystal High-heel Shaped Church in Budai, Chiayi. The other one is the Crystal Church in Beimen, Tainan. Others include the several art installations at the Wedding Attraction in front the Scenic Area’s Headquarters. Each year they manage to attract millions of people. Views vary each season in the area. In spring, it is salt evaporation; in summer, it is sand sculpture; in autumn, sunset view; in winter, migratory birds, and plus seasonal seafood. To have a glimpse of Taiwan’s coastal scenery, choose Southwest Coast National Scenic Area.

  • Beimen Area II
This part is the more populous and busier district along the coast in western Tainan. It was one of the places where the Siraya people, Taiwan’s plains aborigines called home. Extending from Jiali, Soulangh Cultural Park is the centre of culture and art in the area. The exhibitions in the warehouses at the sugar refinery integrates local culture. The Ye Wang Koji ceramics in Jhensing Temple in Jiali District are listed as national historical monuments and have significance in terms of history, culture, and art. Sigang is rich in flax. The Grand Sigang Bridge that stretches over Zengwun River has gained the reputation as being the No.1 bridge in Tainan. The Sigang Procession is performed every three years and regarded as the No.1 procession rituals in Taiwan. The procession integrates both pestilence and procession rituals, and is a crucial religious ceremony in the coastal regions. The impressive procession reaches a climax when the king boat (a boat that is said to carry a king/god and rids a place of plague and evil spirits ) is set ablaze to scare off plagues. With regard to Cigu, it features white and soaring high salt mountains and Taiwan salt museum, which looks like a white pyramid. The ecology along the coast and the sand banks depict the changes in Tainan’s lagoons over the course of history. Cigu has abundant seafood and makes an essential habitat for black-faced spoonbills and migratory birds. To taste the freshest seafood, this is the place!

  • Hayashi Department Store
The Department Store That Inaugurated An Age of Fashion in the 1930s--Hayashi Department Store On December 5th, 1932, Hayashi Department Store opened and thus a modern age of Taiwanese culture began. The decade of 1930s was the start point of modern civilization in Taiwan. As the electric lamps, telephone, and water supply lines popularized, symbols of civilization such like the airplane and motor vehicles flooded into Taiwan. The cafés were becoming the fad of the day, as well as pop culture, movies, phonographs and jazz music. People´s mentality was opening up, and freewill dating was taking over arranged marriages, while dresses was replacing kimonos and Westernized education was popularizing. This was Taiwan in the 1930s. In 1932, Columbia Records Company released the eponymous theme song for a movie in Taiwanese "Peach Blossom Weeps Tears of Blood". In 1933, Teng Yu-hsien's popular song "Viva Tonal: The Dancing Age" helped to launch the first pop music singer Sun-sun (born Lau Tsing-hiong or Lau Chheng-hoing,1914-43) in Taiwan. In the same year Teng wrote and published three classic Taiwanese songs "Bang Chhun-Hong(Looking for the Spring Breeze)", "U ia hue(Flower in the Rainy Night)"and "Guat-ia Tshiu(Sadness in a Moony Night)". As the Pacific War broke out, the final waltz in the Dancing Age of Taiwanwas played. And so the Hayashi Department Store ended its brief yet splendid rendezvous with Tainan. 【The Founder of Hayashi Department Store: Hayashi Houichi】 Hayashi Department Store (ハヤシ百貨) was known to the Tainan people as "The Five-Stories-House"(Gō͘-chàn-lâu-á). It was founded by Japanese businessman Hayashi Houichi. Born in a village in the mountains of Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan on February 6th, 1883, Hayashi lost his parent in his childhood, and was raised by his uncle and aunt. After their death, he grew up on his own means with his brothers and sisters. In 1902, at the tender age of 19, he left the village and entered the Sanyou Railway Company, and left the company 6 years later to start his own delivery company. Still at a tender age, Hayashi wrapped up his company in April, 1912 and came to Tainan the same year to try his luck. Fortunately, he found a mentor in Baba Tokujirou, the owner of Nichikichi Gofukuya, a traditional attire shop, who gave Hayashi a job as bookkeeper in the shop. Hayashi learned about the market, and with his vision and ability, he opened a little shop in Baba's residence, located at Oomiyachou Icchoume Nibannchi (Now the street corner across Quanmei Cinema). Two other shops followed and Hayashi made his first fortune. Investing in four other companies, Hayashi eventually accumulated enough capital to found Hayashi Department Store. The Department Store formally opened on December 5th., 1932, just days after the first department store in Taiwan, Kikumoto Department Store, also known as The Seventh Heaven, opened in Taipei City. Thus Hayashi Department Store became the second large department store in Taiwan, as well as the largest department store in southern Taiwan. Unfortunately, Hayashi himself fell ill days before, and passed away in Taipei on December 10th, 1932. Early January in 2013, Hayashi's second daughter-in-law, Hayashi Chieko and her family came from Japan to visit the Hayashi Department Store. This was the first time a Hayashi family's member entered the building after 80 years. Pale and Lackluster Years After WWII (1945~2013) After the WWII ended in the Pacific in 1945, Hayashi Department Store, damaged by air raids during the war, was transformed into offices by Taiwan Salt Factory and the "Salt Police". The top floor was used for anti-aircraft warfare. In 1977, the Salt Police was transformed into the Third Special Police Corps, and the building was mostly occupied by Taiwan Salt Company, which eventually moved its office to the current Jiankang Road site. Only until 1998 Hayashi Department Store was classified as a Municipal Heritage Site, and the ownership was transferred to the Tainan City Government. Restoration was completed in 2013. A Newborn Sprout in the Spring (2013) After the restoration was completed in 2013, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government launched a bid for outsourcing of the management right and after an open bidding selection, Focus (Koche Development Company) won the bid. After 81 years, Hayashi Department Store will welcome a renaissance as Tainan Cultural Creative Department Store, becoming a window towards a New Modern Age in Tainan, and telling new stories of a newborn sprout of spring. So the New Life Movement has begun in Tainan.
