Your favourite covers of songs that reinvented the original for you?
discussion
Mine would have to be “I will follow you into the dark” originally by Death cabs for cutie ,and covered by Halsey and YUNGBLUD. It’s a crossover I never knew I needed so much and every time I watch it I just sob. Their voices together just add another layer to an already painfully beautiful song and now I can’t listen to the original without wanting to hear Halseys cover as well. What’s yours?

He man’s version of What’s up and the original by 4 non blondes. Both are bangers. It took he man to help me realize it
That’s amazing. On the flip side, 4 Non Blondes cover of Misty Mountain Hop is excellent.
oh yes, the slackcircus version of that song rips
Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” is IMO the greatest improvement anyone has ever made to a song by covering it
Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is a close second
I prefer NINs version
They're both great. I guess I wouldn't even say Cash improved on it but he really made it his own.
Speaking of Dylan covers, the version by Them of "It's all over now Baby Blue" is brilliant.
I feel like such a bad Pink Floyd fan for enjoying this cover but it's so much fun. It makes me feel the extreme opposite of the original. It's not better than the original just different. David Gilmour has said he likes too.
Nah, you get a pass for that one. If it was the Limp Bizkit cover of Wish You Were Here, believe it or not it would be straight to jail for you.
They didn’t!
They did. Back in the early-mid 00’s. And if you haven’t heard it already, trust me when I say it’s even worse than you imagine.
Thank you for your sacrifice
Voivod has a great rendition of Astronomy Domine
I love that one! Brings out the heaviness of the song damn well.
They also did a great cover of the Nile Song
You may dig this cover of Sheep.
Chris Cornell’s version of Nothing Compares to You is 🙌🏼
Chris Cornell’s version of patience
Aye, came on to post this.
Annie Lennox’s version of A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harem
Her cut of Don't Let It Bring You Down is really good.
I havent heard her cut of Whiter Shade - that song is all about the organ to me.
Medusa is a really great album
Her cover of I Put A Spell On You by Screamin Jay Hawkins is also good.
I’ll have to check that out, thanks!
I like her cover of Bob Marley's Waiting In Vain too.
Slayers cover of 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, from Iron Butterfly, off of the less than zero soundtrack
Ironically, The Bangles version of 'Hazy Shade of Winter', originally a Simon and Garfunkel song is on the same album.
'Wave of mutilation' UK Surf, cover the pixies tune.
'Hurt' from NIN covered by Johnny Cash
Mr Bungle, 'Hit me baby One More Time' for Britney Spears
...Along with tenacious D's version.
Neil Young's Harvest Moon covered by Poolside is like, wow that's how you do a cover song.
Sweet Jane by Cowboy Junkies
Velvet Underground did it originally. Both versions are divine IMO.
Devo’s version of Satisfaction
Catpowers version is stellar as well
Jose Gonzales' cover of Heartbeats by The Knife comes to mind https://youtu.be/ik_BQYbbZ5U?si=HmzuQu8H3tJ5jtW7 Knarls Barkley covering Band of Horses "No one's gonna love you more than I do" is pretty great too
I love bands like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Kombucha Librarian who add intensity to existing songs.
Cake - I will survive
Revolting Cocks - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy
Can't hear the originals anymore without laughing!
Cake’s war pigs is also amazing.
I really loved this cover of Alanis Morissette's Hand in My Pocket by The Smith Street Band that I came across recently.
PMJ covering Creep by Radiohead! It feels entirely different sung by a woman. It was like a whole new song.
The singer is Haley Reinhart. The video of her performing "Creep" with Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ) has nearly 123 million views. Haley and PMJ also reinvented "Seven Nation Army." That video has 54 million views.
Haley Reinhart independently recorded "Can't Help Falling in Love" accompanied by just a piano. It went double platinum.
Along those lines she also remade the synth-pop "Bulletproof" by La Roux. It has a mere 5,487 views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrUplMPjJBE
Jeff Buckley’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is so good that I just default to that as the official version
Saint Motel does a cover of Daft Punk’s Something About Us that is also really great. Not quite as much of a reinvention, but it definitely hits different
Blinded by the Light, the Manfred Mann cover of the Boss’s original, blows away Bruce.
Eagles of Death Metal do a pretty decent version along with Save it for the Morning After by Duran Duran.
Thanks. I’ll give it a listen.
"Wrapped up like a douche!"
"Beggin" by Måneskin and "House of The Rising Sun" by The Animals
Robert Plant and Alison Krause - Last Kind Words
Black Hole Sun — Norah Jones
Live performance 5 days after Chris Cornell died
Charles Bradley covering Nirvana's Stay Away hits me hard every fucking time.
Jump by Aztec Camera
Passionfruit by Drake covered by Paramore
Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa covered by Hayley Williams
Tori Amos’ cover of ‘Do It Again’ by Steely Dan
Anything she covers is pretty great.
Mad World - cover by Gary Jules, original by Tears For Fears
Original is way better In my opinion
Pretty much anything by Puddles Pity Party.
Kenny Rogers’ version of The Gambler, and Elvis Costello’s version of (What’s so Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding are iconic.
Mama You Been On My Mind- Jeff Buckley
Right now Metallica's version of Love lies bleeding by Elton John, and I love the original.
Landslide the original by Fleetwood Mac is a classic but great covers by both Smashing Pumpkins and also the Dixie Chicks
Love that cover of I will follow you into the dark. I'd also add these:
Wicked Games - Coeur de Pirate
You Give Love a Bad Name - Atreyu
Aerosmith's version of "Come Together: by The Beatles.
That cover was beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Obadiah Parker’s Hey Ya cover. Makes you realize how melancholy the lyrics of the original really are.
Youre mama dont dance: poison/loggins & messina
Smokin in the boys room: crue/brownsville station
Come together: aerosmith/beatles
Michael Jackson also has a great cover of Come Together.
I thought i knew all of jacksons song... Apparently i missed one. And yes, it was a good rendition.
It came up on my Discover Weekly, along with a dope cover of Midnight Rider by Train (for real they do it well). I have a playlist of songs I’ve added while driving. I think I’m almost up to 600 songs
Check out Tony Rice’s version of The Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald.
Or from the same album, Church Street Blues. He really put his own stamp on that song.
Dax Riggs yesterday.

Kt tunstalls cover of "Tangled up in Blue" and The Brothers Johnson cover of "Come Together"
Does this count? I feel like it should.
If we're in that rabbit hole, Alex Melton's video "If Blink 182 Wrote Semi-Charmed Life" is spot on perfect.

Highway 61 Revisited by Johnny Winter
Honky Tonk Man by Dwight Yoakum
Bobby Womack’s version of California Dreamin’ by the The Mamas & the Papas
Anohni's cut of The Guests.
All Along the Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan original.
"Lola" covered by the Raincoats
Jesus He Knows Me, originally by Genesis and covered by Ghost.
When I first heard the original, I liked how it makes fun of televangelists even though my young self wasn't 100% sure why. A bit too much synth for my musical tastes, but it worked. Even the music video was fun.
Then I heard the cover by Ghost and was blown away. Much more metal, and it feels less sarcastic and more bitter. And the video managers to be NSFW without violence, nudity, or foul language.
The sound of silence by nevermore.
"Honky Tonkin'" - The The
This version of I Want To Hold Your Hand goes through like 7 genres of music. I enjoy the Hell out of it.
Roxanne.
I don't really care about original The Police version.
I like more George Michael version:

Clem Snide - don't stop believing on the album Clem Snides Journey. Please listen and enjoy. They make every cover their own.
The Disturbed cover of The Sound of Silence.
Hungry like the Wolf! Originally by Durrant Durrann remade by Reel Big Fish! Took the song in such anouther direction.
You somehow managed to get both words different and both words wrong. 🤣
Duran Duran
I've never claimed to be a clever or attentive man. Appreciate you. Haha.
LOL. I was really hoping you would see the lighthearted humor in my response as that's all it was meant to be.
If you like Hungry Like the Wolf, check out Hold Back the Rain and My Own Way from the same album (Rio) if you don't already know them. Great work by that great band.
I did! That why I put "haha!"
Hold back the rain & my own way from the Rio album? Yes I will check this out...
Checked it out. I liked the Reel Big Fish version because it became upbeat, and wacky!
