Dwight Englewood School is undeniably a college preparatory institution. In terms of academics, Dwight ensures that students are equipped for the workload college offers, resonating with the campus atmosphere, cultivating meaningful student-teacher relationships conducive to college life, and developing the independence necessary for collegiate success. Socially, though occasionally cliquey, it offers diverse clubs and events for student exploration. Exceptional food, including the mini in-school corner store: The Coop, enhances student experience. However, challenges in addressing racism and a weak athletics program exist. Nonetheless, under new leadership, proactive steps are being taken by both DEIB director and the new head of school to promote inclusivity and school spirit. Efforts are underway to prevent racism and implement proactive solutions while the head of school continues to improve school spirit by uniting students from k-12 and boosting sports enthusiasm.
As parents our experience with Dwight Englewood was big on promises during the interview process and weak on delivery after several years. It pushes outdated pedagogy disguised as academic rigor. The teachers and administration are unresponsive. The grading system is murky at best.
Worst of all is that there is a clear difference in how the school treats students connected to donors and the rest of the student body. There is no desire to motivate or mentor students, and if your child needs support consider yourself out of luck. Do your child a favor and look elsewhere.

As an African American student at Dwight Englewood, I’d really like to see the administration demonstrate a willingness to understand and hear black students at DE. I never felt quite comfortable addressing the racist, micro-aggressive situations I would be placed in. Recently, I felt we should boost awareness about racism at our school. A white teacher had used the n-word and jokingly apologized about it. As a Black affinity leader, I was hoping that students who felt impacted by this situation and I could address the effect of what happened during the morning meeting (as the hearing council would do with student affairs, keeping the defendant anonymous). I was essentially told to divert my attention elsewhere. I feel it’s imperative to listen to students and their struggles at the school to make the community a safe space for all. As I write this, I hope I can use the rest of my senior year to address problems like this, and hopefully come to a solution with the administration.
