Biography

  • Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, US, Andwele Gardner (born February 14th, 1978) better known by his stage name Dwele, is an American soul and R&B singer/songwriter, known for his smooth, relaxed grooves.

Having lost his father at the age of ten, after he was murdered outside their family home, Dwele found solace in music, through which he was able to recover from this tragedy. Surrounded by the music of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Detroit's Motown legacy, Dwele began studying music, learning to play the trumpet, bass and guitar.

He recorded a bedroom demo, which he titled "The Rize," selling 100 copies locally within a week, catching the attention of fellow Detroit natives, Slum Village, J Dilla's renowned hip-hop group. They invited Dwele to sing on their track "Tainted," from the album "Trinity (Past,Present,Future) in 2002, which became a hit for the group.

Through his songwriting prowess and adept performance abilities, Dwele was signed to Virgin Records in 2003, releasing his major debut, "Subject," which became particularly popular with European audiences. His second album, "Some Kinda…" (2005) reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B chart. His next three releases, "Sketches of a Man" (2008), "W.ants W.orld W.omen" (2010) and "Greater Than One" (2012) continued this success in breaking into the top ten.

His music has been praised for its vintage sound rooted in soul yet also its contemporary re-imagining of Motown and soul through his use of hip-hop influenced production and grooves. He manages to avoid rehashing old ideas, instead delivering forward-thinking soul music that sounds fresh and exciting.

  • Dwele

When I heard that Dwele was coming to Yoshi's in San Francisco, I jumped on the opportunity. I'm a huge Neo Soul fan, and an even bigger Dwele fan. So I purchased the tickets. Now Yoshi's Cafe usually has a relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy great food and drinks, while enjoying your favorite artist at the same time. This night was different. I was surprised to see that there were no tables. Your only option was to stand. That was good enough for me though. I thought, "let's enjoy Dwele in a totally authentic, intimate way.." lol. The house filled up with Men and Women with the same style and Neo Soul, relaxed energy that I had. I loved it. I just felt like it was such a sexy, adult vibe going on in the building. It was the perfect way to set the mood for Dwele to come out. The lights were dimmed, and the stage was very small. Just enough room for a band and a singer. Perfect. As we waited and the anticipation built up, a DJ somewhere in the corner of Yoshi's played similar artist like, Eric Roberson, Marsha Ambrosia, and Musiq Soulchild. You could feel the Love in the building, and part of that was due to that fact that the building was packed with about 80% couples. I was there with Friends, so that sucked (lol). The Band started playing indicating that Dwele was about to come out, and the crowd started clapping, and focusing their attention on the stage. Dwele came out wearing a cream semi casual suit looking amazing,

The Band began to play "Open your eyes," and everything and everyone else in the room just vanished for me. Dwele was on stage using those gifted vocal cords to belt out one of my all time favorite songs. He spoke to us about the song first. Told us what inspired it. He explained like it was just you and him having a convo. He was very good with the crowd. Everyone sung along with the song, and some guys sung to their special someone. It was amazing. He knew exactly who his audience was that night apparently because he called couples up on stage and allowed them to sing to each other. It was beautiful. He sounded even better in person and had an amazing personality to match. It was an all around Breath-taking show. The only thing I would do differently is go with My Man to make it much better. It was a perfect atmosphere for a date. Whether you're married or just dating. Great Performer!

  • This was the most boring concert ever! He talked for 90% of the show and when he did sing we couldn't hear him. He was not holding anyone's attention and was engaging more with his band than the audience. It didn't get entertaining until the last 20mins of the show. I will never spend another $ on him. oh and having couples up on the stage demonstrating their sexy time was distasteful. Do better Dwele! Honestly I would like a refund!

  • Dwele is a phenomenal entertainer. He's extremely personable and and I just love the part where at the end of his show he comes into the audience and make a casual introduction with his fans. Unlike many artists, he doesn't mind if you want to take a selfie with him or engage in a two-step ChaCha. He's just really down to earth which makes him stand out amongst other artists.

  • His performance was great, the band was excellent as well. It was too many opening acts, with sets way too long, but other than that it was an awesome experience. it was said that the promoter over booked the venue so our original seats were taken, but we were accommodated by the M15 venue staff with practically front row seats.

  • The show was fantastic, Dwele did a run thru of his classics b4 Eric Roberson blessed us with an impromptu performance of "Hold On". Then later on Raheem Devaughn showed up and did a little ad lib song. The only drawback was Dwele didnt have a live band backing him up. Other than the show was on the money!!
