We are frequent visitors to Durango. We usually love this time of year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year at Thanksgiving the streets were decorated with a multitude of Christmas decorations on the street lights, string across the street and in just about every store. In addition horse drawn carriages were in main street.
Unfortunately all that was missing this year. Mother nature played her part with about 7 to 8 inches of snow the day after Thanksgiving but historic Durango was completely void of any Christmas spirit. No lights, no Christmas wreaths, no horse draw carriages - nothing. In that regard it was a very disappointing experience. Just for that reason we may decide to take our pre-christmas trip to another mountain community where the Christmas spirit is still on full display.
I can only hope that Durango will bring back all the wonderful Christmas decorations that make it so wonderful to stroll on main street under the Christmas lights in the evening.

We spent a week visiting several cities in and around the San Juans and absolutely loved our time here. Not nearly as crowded as other parks in Colorado and so beautiful. We loved it. Definitely recommend it to anyone in the area.

This is a wonderful trail! We rode our bikes from the south end to downtown and back. Park staff was cleaning and doing maintenance and they do a great job. We'll be back!

Took my little dog in a front facing sling. Walked a few miles. Saw many on bikes or w dogs. It was everything I hoped it would be

Great walking trail along the river. Very easy to walk or bike; all paved. Several parks along the way. Highly recommend.

About 2 inches fresh snow-fun. Lovely vistas from the slopes. This is a mid-size resort with about 2000 vertical. Prices are reasonable, and the crowd on a later-season weekday was very modest-no lift lines. Runs vary from quite easy, with many intermediate runs to quite difficult (quite a few mogul runs, a bit beyond me). The layout was a bit odd, with several long lifts splayed along the mountain, but fairly long (and in some cases slow, with lots of poling/skating) between them. Lifts are modern, fast, easy to board. Restrooms and eating facilities readily available.

The website said that many runs had been groomed, which was not really true. They may have been groomed in the last several days, but overall the grooming was minimal, which makes it harder for an intermediate/advanced intermediate like me.

Easy drive from Durango, which is an easy place to stay, etc.

Had a visitor in town and took him to the Museum. Was greeted by a very knowledgeable and friendly volunteer who gave me a run down of what the Museum had to offer. Very good video on the fish raised there and Fish Hatchery operations. A second video also plays on facts about the wildlife we have in Colorado. The museum houses numerous animal mounts that live in Colorado. Pelts are also available to handle if one so desires to get a feel for the critter! A small room is also an option for kids to draw animals and enjoy sitting down! There is also a quiz to test ones knowledge on what is in the museum. All of this free though donations are appreciated. Parking is not an issue as well and is free. A walk through the hatchery raceways next to museum to see the fish being raised is a must thing to do as well. There is something for all ages to enjoy.

The hot springs is on the road headed to Silverton from Durango. Pretty cool that it's there by itself on the side of the road. Only need a few minutes to stop and take a few pics. Be sure to also stop at Bakers Bridge about 5 min away. It's off the main road but worth the short detour.

Best mining museum I have ever visited! Give yourself at least an hour; two would be better.
The jail tour is connected and is a very good museum as well.
The mining museum starts in the basement of the jail and then goes across and upstairs (two floors!) and then back down to the main floor.

One of the best community recreation centers I’ve seen anywhere. Well laid out facility with space for many guests. Lap pool has very wide lanes which very easily two or more swimmers . Recreation pool also very large space enough for children, as well as adults to do their thing. Nice size indoor track upstairs. Lots of workout equipment in different types of spaces. Very friendly and helpful staff. We rented towels as well as locks for lockers. A real bargain for a very reasonable entry fee. Nice to be able to keep up our workouts, even though on vacation

This is not a hard hike unless you are not use to the Elevation.
It tops out around 8100 ft.
The views are worth the hike.
However be aware of your surroundings.
I got caught in a big thunderstorm and I usually don't get caught.
    They can be nasty
