Drumduan is a small and friendly school with a strong sense of community. The classes and age-groups mix happily in the  expansive natural playground, and know all of the teachers well. Our many festival's and fairs are well-attended and the older children often take a big role in holding these events. We nurture a strong sense of community and age-appropriate responsibilty throughout the school.

Singing and music plays a daily role in school life, and you will often see classes outside, for movement, skipping, games or lessons. At Michaelmas, the classes mix for Outdoor Learning Week, and complete projects around the school grounds. You will often see parents and volunteers contributing their time, and classes often on expeditions around the local area.

CURRICULUM & THE DEVELOPING CHILD

image00630.jpeg

The curriculum of the school is based on the phases and growth of the developing child and the image of the human being as outlined by Rudolf Steiner. It is based on human relationships. Thus, the faculty, staff and students work with each other in a human-centred way. The school leadership supports the healthy development of each individual and the community as a whole.

The highly interdisciplinary curriculum blends academics with lessons in the fine and practical arts, nature and agricultural-based activities, class trips, outdoor learning and more.  The lessons taught at every age help promote the growing individuality of the students.  The activities in the classroom are based on a well-developed knowledge of the growing child and educational instinct informed by the teachers’ ongoing professional development and their ongoing study of their class.

APPROACH TO TEACHING

The children’s development phases guide the approach in each area of the school. Before the age of seven, educating the will of the child is given emphasis.

In practice, this means children are taught out of imitation rather than direct instruction. After seven, educating the feeling life takes centre stage, while independent thinking is cultivated in the Upper School.

CLASS & TEACHER
JOURNEY

A particular teacher may stay with the same class throughout the lower school (Class 1 to 8).

Deep friendships and relationships are formed with children and families that can shape their character and who they are as human beings.

MAIN LESSON

All the core subjects are taught in rhythmically structured main lesson daily periods of 120 minutes. These lessons take place every morning for a period of 3 to 4 weeks.

In that way, the main lesson changes subject and alternates throughout the school year, taking into account the rhythm and learning of the whole class.

CELEBRATING THE SEASONS THROUGH VARIOUS FESTIVALS

The seasons of the year are marked through various festivals, which help the growing child to anchor its identity within and throughout the years.  From the bright Maypole dancing in Spring to little lanterns fluttering in the dark on the Martinmas walk, the festivals are always a highlight of the school year.

ECOLOGICAL &
ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS

Reverence for nature and the environment is given emphasis.

The school is in the process of transforming itself into a place where sustainability and a regenerative culture is cultivated not only in terms of technology and the environment but also in mindset and approach.
