Dreamgirls' simple characters and plot hardly detract from the movie's real feats: the electrifying performances and the dazzling musical numbers.

Alan Joseph H Turned it off half way through. Did not like the music (which is nothing like the 60's music that the story is about). The film is tedious, and boring, despite the cast. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Jade M I've loved this movie since I was 6 years old. This has always been a favorite for me and the casting was top notch. Must see for EVERYONE. Shoutout to JHud, Beyoncé, Anika, J.Foxx, Eddie, Sharon, and Keith for making this movie what it is! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Elijah B Fantastic soundtrack Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Alec B Obviously the songs are great and they lead to some truly memorable scenes (the stage musical is a classic for a reason) but overall this plays like a typical biopic stuck on montage mode for most of the movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Jona I Superficial characters and plot, and the operetta-to-musical moments are kind of awkward, but the performances are powerful! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/15/23 Full Review Murilo C eu simplesmente amo esse musical, é o meu favorito. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Edward Porter Times (UK) There is a blast of true soul power in Eddie Murphy’s performance as a James Brown type. Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Neither thought-provoking nor entertaining enough - remains largely average and underwhelming. Rated: 2/4 Jan 24, 2019 Full Review Bob Mondello NPR.org The energy is so high in sequences like this -- and there are lots of them -- that it almost doesn't matter that we've seen this story before, in Ray and other film biographies about the "heartbreak" of musical stardom. Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Disconnect yourself from the story, which follows the basic rise-and-fall lifeline of every musician biopic ever, and you’ll at least be able to enjoy several good songs and a [good] performance by Eddie Murphy. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 8, 2024 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter It has taken 25 years for Michael Bennett's Dreamgirls to go from Broadway to the big screen. The delay can be forgiven, however, because the film rocks on all levels. May 19, 2020 Full Review Mattie Lucas The Dispatch (Lexington, NC) Very much rooted in its disco-era decadence, but it is always fiercely, vibrantly fresh Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 6, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
