No Jedi mind trick. This Modesto lawmaker will be home to celebrate Star Wars Day

If you’re a “Star Wars” fan who’s not been stuck in the Sarlacc pit, you know that May 4 — as in “May the Fourth be With You” — is Star Wars Day.

May 4 celebrations of Modesto native George Lucas’s galaxy far, far away go back at least to 2011, when Toronto Underground Cinema organized the first celebration of Star Wars Day, according to MovieWeb.com.

In his hometown the City Council in 2016 proclaimed the day “May The Fourth Be With You Day.” Here and in other spots in Stanislaus County, the unofficial holiday is set to be celebrated Saturday.

Downtown, a May the Fourth be With You event will include lightsaber duels, live music, vendors and more on Tenth Street Plaza. It will run from 5-9 p.m. and admission is free. Learn more at www.modestoview.com.

If one Jedi knight looks familiar at the 10th Street celebration, it could be you’re seeing Assemblyman Juan Alanis. He was robed for an event at the state Capitol on Thursday and said he’ll be dressed the same way on Saturday in Modesto.

Assemblyman Juan Alanis, R-Modesto, wearing Jedi robes and carrying a lightsaber to celebrate Star Wars and Modesto native George Lucas, speaks with Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria, D-Merced, at the state Capitol on Thursday. “It’s a big day in my district,” he said. “Saturday will actually be May the 4th and I’ll actually be dressed this way in the Centre Plaza in Modesto.”

Also downtown, Persuasion Brewing is having a May The 4th Be With You Rock Show. To be clear, that’s rock music, not a celebration of meteorites.

Scheduled bands include Lost Puppy Forever, Zoe Rose Music, Odilon, My Soul To Keep, A Heroes Mission, Kicking God in the Mouth and SeaWater. Doors open at 1 p.m. and performances are from 2 to 10 p.m.

Admission to the all-ages show is $10. Persuasion is at 500 Seventh St.

The people at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market have made their own play on words for Star Wars Day: May the fork be with you!

The market festivities will include “a costume contest and cooking demo with Chef Mark,” according to its Facebook page. Market hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it’s at 16th and H streets.

And at the main Stanislaus County Library, which is right next to the farmers market, Star Wars Day will be observed with a “mini lightsabers” project in its maker space. The drop-in program is for ages 5 and up.
