The Cavs may be in line to chase Doug McDermott.

The Cavs are hoping to take a shot at Doug McDermott according to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor. The Cavs need three-point shooting and McDermott has proven to be an interesting piece for teams over the years. He’s been both a small and power forward with excellent shooting, solid athleticism, and an overall good player. The Cavs need a lot of help, but scoring, especially from three-point range, is arguably their biggest need.

McDermott helps with that, especially after his three-year stint in Indianapolis, where he had the best number of his career. According to Fedor, the Cavs intend on taking a look at McDermott and theorizes that they might take a look at a few other players as well.

"But the Cavs simply need a few more capable rotation players. The roster needs a better balance of youth and experience. Pacers swingman Doug McDermott will get consideration. Spencer Dinwiddie is likely out of Cleveland’s price range. Lauri Markkanen is an intriguing restricted free agent who may need a change of scenery but would create a funky logjam at power forward. Would Dallas choose cap space over Tim Hardaway Jr., letting him walk? New Orleans’ cap room situation — and desire to make a splash in hopes of helping Zion Williamson — could lead to potential restricted free agent Josh Hart failing to get a qualifying offer."

Cavs may need to clear cap space to go after anyone but Doug McDermott

McDermott fits with the Cavs’ needs really well but the team needs more than just McDermott. If the team can swing a trade and clear their books of Taurean Prince and Kevin Love, then the team can go after guys like Lauri Markkanen and Lonzo Ball, but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a likelihood at this juncture.

The team also has to worry about Jarrett Allen and potentially Collin Sexton getting new deals with the team. If the team can’t get a massive haul for Sexton, then they should reconsider extending his deal alongside Allen’s. Especially if the team is committed to keeping Allen and drafting rookie center Evan Mobley.

The team doesn’t need three centers, and the Cavs need to decide what they’re going to be doing with Allen and Sexton soon.
