Time to fix Crow

Discussion

Over-corrected in 2023 with successive nerfs, it’s time to make the OG Legendary relevant again. (Or at least, ‘fun’…)

Before Charlie, Chuck, Kit, Mico, Larry, Angelo or Melodie, people complained Crow was op. The result: 4 consecutive nerfs and a crash landing below Edgar into the dregs of D-tier.

In February 2024, Crow’s use rate was 13th of 76. During that time, he was 72nd of 76 brawlers in win-rate. 😥 Across the entire meta, he was 5th-worst overall.

If Legendary brawlers aren’t gonna be balanced such that they’re in the top third (top 25)… in what respect are they “Legendary”? Bottom 5 is ridiculous.

  1. Return his poison back to -20% dmg (June 2023 it was -25%, now -15%)

  2. Re-lengthen his slowing gadget to 3s (June 2023 it was 5s, now 2s)

A strong argument can be made that Crow should be top 20, but just barely. Perhaps 19th in win rate (75th percentile) & still require skill to play strongly/ as game-changer.

I invested the time to play in r26 territory with randoms, using his Carrion SP… but the experience sucks, a Crow session is far too volatile, he’s entirely team-dependent (majority of matches have predictable outcomes before they begin), and monthly maintenance can fast become torture. With his slowing gadget at 2s, teammates don’t recognize the enemy team is parked until they’re already free again. Forget about carrying, he can’t even be an effective facilitator. I can’t imagine anyone who isn’t an r35 player trying to keep him at, or near, r30.

Again, this is an OG Legendary. SC should pick a lane with this dude & stick to it. It’s been 9 months. If they really want a “Rare”-grade Crow, just move him out of the Leg category & be transparent.

Crow mains, what say you?

Edit: I see a lot of responses focus on ‘noobs’. Please see my reply to the comment below 👇, in regards to that.

I don’t understand why people still think the rarity of the brawler determines how good they are, it’s how unique their mechanics are 🤦‍♂️

Not to be contentious or anything… Extra Toxic is Crow. Who wants to use a SP that merely cancels out a damage gear for 4 seconds? Without his Extra Toxic SP being useful, what is the uniqueness that merits his Legendary status?

He was bottom 5 because he is overused by noobs.
It happens a lot specially with brawlers like Mortis, Edgar, Crow and to some extent Fang. Fan fave that require skill played by noobs who literally lower their win rate by a lot. Fang is the only one who can survive because he is cheap af but the other 3 suffer a lot.

I dont think people take into consideration the use of brawlers by "noobs" when they create a ranking chart.

Any brawler that becomes a fan fave is gonna be used everywhere no matter what which will cause a tragedy within the winrate lol.

I reached out to SC, end of February: they don’t factor any matches below 200 trophies into win/loss analysis. Their data includes matches with players at 1250+. One could argue those results are from a relatively small BS constituency (1250 - 1500 range) - possibly, matches that are statistical outliers.

Maybe a separate analysis of 500 - 1250 match data would eliminate outlier skill biases. However, since I have not filtered the API queries with those boundaries (and can’t, atm), check out www.brawlplanet.com

This page shows statistics by brawler.

They have 500+, 600+, and 700+ trophy filters. All data is sourced from brawlers at Power Level 9-11.

At 500+:

  • Crow is 27th in win rate, 48.43%

  • Crow is 10th in use rate, 9.09%

At 600+:

  • Crow is 31st in win rate, 48.29%

  • Crow is 9th in use rate, 9.24%

At 700+:

  • Crow is 32nd in win rate, 47.99%

  • Crow is 8th in use rate, 9.41%

There are two obvious trends:

  1. Crow is used MORE as trophy level ⬆️

  2. Crow wins LESS as trophy level ⬆️

The hypothesis that low-skill ‘noobs’ are carte blanche contaminating the data with outsized losses & hyper-usage that’s over-weighted their outcomes is actually backwards. People win more often with a Level 9+ Crow at 🏆 < 500.

For completeness, we’d want to see the data at 800+, 900+, 1000+, etc. Is there a significant drop-off, somewhere?

We would need to know how many matches fall into each pair of ranks (categorical n-size).

We would also need a static, defined, time period for inclusion. Brawl Planet only looks at the most recent 30 days. Perhaps a quarterly review would be more appropriate since the maps change every month, holidays impact total matches played - esp by non-children, school breaks do the opposite.

We can conclude that, on average, every other Team brawl has a Crow. So there’s a high n-size.
We can conclude that the higher one’s skill level, the less likely they’ll win as Crow. His win rate is between very poor & mid-pack, depending on skill & power level.

Imo, he’d be well served with the +1s to his slow. If the goal is to have ppl successfully use his poison SP, which is his signature, it should do more than nullify a damage gear for all of 4 seconds.

Once he’s in Carrion mode, he’s a low damage “assassin” that doesn’t give teammates much advantage unless he’s speeding through a set of bushes & there’s no Melodie/ Edgar/ Leon/ etc. on enemy team.

Never cook again

Legendary should not mean op or always meta

Also he have an awfull win rate because all 9 year old use him. Not as bad as Mortis. On opposite pole, less used brawlers have relative high win rate, like Ash

Crow is not bad atm. Is just underwhelming atm. Plus he was top 10 for years.

Legendary should not mean op or always meta

Agreed.

rarity SHOULD NOT determine place in meta

u/Distinctly_Distinct avatar

Agreed… mostly.
It would be strange if a Leg was F- tier.

It's takes like this that players like you don't need to waste their time thinking about the game's balance.

I think I just had a brain fart trying to read your comment.

Ah yes, buff all legendaries to s tier and nerf all rares to f tier. Great plan

Not at all my ‘plan’.

Mb I put TMI.

Crow is Leg because he lowers the damage capabilities of enemies. That’s his signature. He also facilitates opportunities, or escape, by slowing enemies.

If the slow is just 2s, and the enemy only has their damage gear cancelled out for 4s, what did Crow achieve that is legendary?

Other brawlers have slows (ex. Mico, Squeak) Other squishies do more damage (ex. Brock, Piper). Other brawlers move just as fast (ex. Leon, Max, Edgar, Bibi)

??
