Abstract

Describes the relationship of Anna Freud and Dorothy Burlingham, beginning with Burlingham's arrival with her children in 1925 in Vienna to seek psychoanalytic help for her 10-yr-old son, Bob. Anna Freud accepted Bob Burlingham as her patient, with his 8-yr-old sister, Mabbie, and Dorothy began analysis with T. Reik and then, later, with Freud. The therapeutic relationship between the Burlinghams and Freuds was quickly complemented by a personal one between Dorothy and Anna, and the benefits of this relationship for each of them are explored. The life that they lived together is viewed as a remarkable and highly productive one, full of challenge, frustration, disappointment, and triumph.
