Two years have passed since the battle with Majin Boo. Mr. Satan's hotel, built as a commemoration of the victory over Boo, is finally complete!!
Gokuu and the other fighters are invited as guests. While Gokuu and the others are enjoying the party, a strange pod falls to Earth. Inside, a sharp-eyed Saiyan detects strong fighting abilities and takes a small alien along to the party! When the Saiyan encounters Vegeta, his words shock everyone!!
This movie takes place several years after the Buu fight. It was cool to see Goku and his buddies again after so long; however, I'd only watch this movie if you're a hardcore fan as you're not missing anything... just a non-climatic fight.
Dragon Ball: Ossu! Kaette Kita Son Goku to Nakamatachi!! is one of the three anime for celebrating the 40th anniversary of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine (the other two anime are One Piece and Tegami Bachi). You can watch this Dragonball Z special for free, although you need to use the Jumpland browser, i.e. you need MS Windows. I don't know whether Mac users can watch the special. Perhaps you can install the needed Jumpland browser via the open-source wine, which you can download at www.winehq.org.
Lets see how good the Dragonball Z special for the anniversary has become.
Animation=6; the animations are okay and sometimes average at best - the in-between animations are not as good as those in the tv series or movies, but the 3D generated ones (cell-shaded ones), used for rotating/zooming/viewing panorama, first person view during fights etc., are good.
Sound=8; The original OP song "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" is the opening song for this Dragonball Z special, which is still very good (much better than the "Dragon, Dragon, Dragon, Dragonball" rock song for the western market - I don't know the actual name for this song). Furthermore, the usual familiar background music/ambient is also here in the special. The voice-acting by the seiyus are good, but nothing spectacular. Maybe one voice is a bit off: the voice for Krilin which should be done by Mayumi Tanaka (yes, the same famous seiyu for Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece); maybe a cold(?).
Story=6; I find the story/script for this anniversary special quite enjoyable. Most of the time the anime is funny, even during the fights. The story is quite simple (maybe a little too simple): meeting everyone and fight a couple of villains who're related to an old enemy. Overall very enjoyable and funny, especially when the "staring each other for minutes before fights" moments are gone/absent which are quite usual in the tv series. A typical special.
Character=7; it is good to see that almost every cast of the Dragonball Z anime appear in the special, except Tenshinhan (Tien) - although one of his "special move" is used during the anime special.
the seiyu for the character Tenshinhan (Tien), Hirotaka Suzuoki, has passed away because of lung cancer in 2006)
The others who are missing are Chaozu (Tenshinhan's sidekick) and villains like Frieza, Cell, etc..
Surprises are
Tarble (Vegita's younger brother) and especially Tarble's wife, Gure!
Value=8; The value is good, since you can watch the special for free, although you need MS Windows and have to install the Jumpland browser. Other issue that I had while watching the special is the buffering which is quite slow. It would be a 9 if it was an issue-free experience.
Enjoyment=7; I must say I have enjoyed this special, although I have expected more, e.g. better fight scenes, better animations, and above all, where are the Dragonballs and Sheng Long!?
Overall, this Dragonball Z anniversary special is fun to watch and good for a laugh. But it may be just too shallow for the real die-hard Dragonball Z fans.
I felt it should have looked better than it did, especially after coming back to this series after so much time.
The story, well for what it is i think it works.
I have warm childhood memories of DBZ, and i felt like i was revisiting an old friend i hadn't seen in a long time.
The jokes made me laugh or at least smirk, and the fighting (what there was of it) was good. Though, i have to say Gotenks is about my least favorite character and sadly most of the fighting centers around him (them?).
Its a good warm up for DB online coming out next year :)
It definitely leaves you wishing DBZ could go on forever.
