As a sophomore in high school in 1971
I now like a lot of the "mellow" music of 1971 as much as the hard rock of deep purple etc etc.

I bought this also in 1971 and it's a great one! Also bought the T. Rex album that came out prior to this one, it was pretty good too.

One record I discovered in February 1971 was this famous one by Marvin Gaye (who I hadn't heard of until then). Was turned on to it by a teenage record store clerk (a girl) who was just a couple years older than me.

    of a very heavy week
    the earthmen did confront me

Here begins a period of time when the album charts were of far more interest to me than the singles charts. This would continue through most of the 1970s. Several times I have perused a singles chart from this time period and thought "Strange, I remember the music of this year as being better than that. Then I look at the album chart for the same time, and the mystery falls into place.

Obviously people were still buying singles, but I'm not sure who, because none of my friends or work colleagues with whom I discussed music ever bothered with singles, except on the rare occasion that they liked a certain track and the rest of the album turned out to be a dud. Or if there was no accompanying album, though that seemed rare.
