Three girls on a hedonistic holiday in Spain are invited to party on board a yacht with a group of young men; things take a violent and tragic turn and the girls find themselves in jeopardy.
The unsavoury depiction of a sex and drugs culture in the Med is probably the main reason for negative ratings here, but it's also a plot line that becomes increasingly unbelievable despite the efforts of the cast; it does have some tension and plausibility, but it's flaws mitigate much of this – see what you think.
The standard UK DVD release has a lot of extras including a commentary, cast and director interviews, deleted scenes and a “making of” featurette; English subtitles are available if required.
3 ½ stars, ideally.
Three young women from Leeds,Lisa, Kim and Tammi, on holiday in Mallorca, go out to party and have a girly night out. They go to a bar and meet three men called Bluey, Josh and Marcus. After a bit of flirting takes place the girls are told that if they want to, they can come back to the lads posh yacht to have a party. Tammi is initially reticent, reminding her pals that their meant to be on a night out together, but Kim talks her in to coming along. When they reach the boat, they are met by Josh's brother Sean.
They decide that to party hard, they should sail out to sea. Once there, Bluey hands out the drugs and everybody gets loved up, various sexual acts are discussed, and then Bluey, Marcus, Kim and Lisa retire downstairs to the bedroom. Bluey starts making love to Lisa, inviting shy Josh to first film the action then join in with them. The problem is Josh gets a bit carried away, over excited by the wild sex acts talked about earlier, and he tries one of these acts, the Donkey Punch, out on Lisa. A moment later, and Lisa is lying dead on the bed, her neck broken.
Kim and Tammi sit in shock, unable to comprehend what has hapened to their friend. The boys on the other hand have different concerns. Their careers could be in ruins if the truth comes out, and they decide to cover up the death, and the girls are going to comply whether they like it or not. Soon, nobody is safe aboard the yacht, as the recriminations continue, and the violence escalates.
Reading the other reviews on here, you will probably think that I've gone completely mad by awarding this film 5 out of 5. The thing is, I came into this film with some pretty negative preconceptions. I only had other reviews to go on, and these reviews told me that the film was morally bankrupt, full of unpleasant characters, and horrific sexual violence. Well, I'm pleased to report back that my preconceptions were very wrong. Once the viewer gets through the sex and drugs, and once Lisa has been killed, the film turns into a very taut thriller, with the yacht providing a very claustrophobic settingfor the drama to unfold. There are nice, subtle changes of character in those aboard. Josh for example, who starts off shy and nervous, through the need for self preservation becomes very cold and calculating. It turns into a sort of class war on the boat in fact, as the 'respectable' public school boys try to impose their will on the working class girls.
I thought that the female characters were very sympathetic. Theres no crime in being naiive enough to go out to sea with a group of strange men. Likewise, the motivations of the lads is also complex, with Sean siding with his friends initially through a misguided sense of family loyalty. I thought that the cast of young British actors gave their all, led by the very talented Jaime Winstone as Kim. The cinematography is quite beautiful, providing the viewer with scene after scene of lush visual splendour. Theres also an excellent soundtrack that compliments the film very well.
As to the accusation that the film is just plain disgusting, well I found it to be quite restrained, relying on tension just as much as gore to carry the viewer along. In my opinion, the films only crime is to be a victim of its own reputation. It does at least attempt to examine when the dreams of the loved up generation go terribly wrong, and the fallacy of glamourising drug use.
A very pleasant suprise. Recommended. 5 out of 5
No spoliers - or even spoilers...
First I saw the title and thought wha...? Then i read the blurb, and thought you've got to be kidding. On so many levels.
Obviously I had to check this out. And I'm glad I did. The characters were all remarkably believable. It all just seems so ordinary. Which makes it so much more anticipatory. Are they going to show it? how will they show it? and if they do what then? In some respects it would have been even better if you hadn't known what was coming. So if you know nothing about this film get it NOW don't read anymore and just watch it.
The start seemed almost drifting but sets it up nicely. There is the usual mix of characters shy trappy creepy scary a sort of cross between the spice whatsits and the snow whites chumps.
It's not until you sit down and think about it that you actually start to see the dilemma - what WOULD you do? And the answer to this is what makes up the second and third thirds of the film. Apparently a olot of first timers in the crew but it doesn't show. its well acted, well scripted, well filmed and well edited. (the editing is bourn out by the scenes that were cut. NOT because they were too rude but because they altered the flow of the story)
I really couldn't predict the out come. And you do find yourself asking 'oh yeah and will they come back after a false ending...?' to answer it watch it..
the events were utterly believable - adding to the menace.
Some might draw parallels to Dead Calm but that's not really valid. I'm sure the location distracts from other stories that must be similar. But it is the location that is quite clever and plays a key point in the saga.
The one character - I'm rubbish with names - the young brother who is the cause - is well played. NOT over played and not wooden or stilted - Once you spot it you can almost see the brain whirring. - A thorough vile human being - well, a bit strong but I wouldn't want to know him.
ACID TEST: would I buy/watch again or recommend - YES
On the plus side, it's quite well shot, though the editing and direction are just a bit obvious - the Chekhov advice to playwrights, if you have a gun hanging on the wall in act one, it has to be used in act two. So we see plenty of artifacts which will later find a use in the plot (and generally in the dismemberment of one or other of the characters).
I do, however, use the word 'characters' loosely. You take a loose bunch of three randy Leeds lassies, stick 'em on a boat with four randy young blokes, mix in some alcohol, sunshine, sea, bikinis, drugs, and some really contrived sex, and what have you got? Well, a film with some naked women, a lot of gore (all very tastefully done), a couple of imaginative executions, and a plot which is a bit of a steeplechase ... it's driven by the question, "how do we get over the next hurdle?" You pray there is an end in sight. There are, however, no characters, just roles - the chess pieces who move the action forward.
The film was evidently sold on its sexual content. Well, Sian Breckin has a very watchable body, and she does get her clothes off and flash it around for a few minutes. The sex is extraordinarily tame ... and characterless. And predictable. And functional - the sort of sex that people do for appearance sake but don't expect to enjoy. It was like watching young strangers having married middle-aged sex. Frankly, I've had more fun peeling a cucumber.
The gore? Well, reasonably well choreographed to be fair. Well, reasonably well pictured. And, well, reasonably tasteful. The murder, mayhem and gore is a cut above the average American student gore-fest. At least there are no vampires, werewolves, psychotic serial killers, or whatever running amok here. Just seven half-witted 20-somethings.
And that's the problem. These are a bunch of half-wits. You find it very hard to believe in them as characters, you find it impossible to identify with them (mind you, the lassies are supposed to be from Leeds), and you certainly find it impossible to like them. A couple of minutes into the film and I was adopting an unapologetically sexist attitude (or maybe, just a heterosexual male one) and hoping the girls would get their clothes off - it was, after all, the only thing about them I was going to like. Gimme five minutes of nudity then have the boat blow up killing them all outright, and I won't have to sit through another hour of this.
You have no sympathy for these self-inflatable characters. You really don't care if they come to a sticky end. It is boringly predictable in places - it's obvious what the boys see in the girls, you wonder why even a bunch of Leeds lassies would fall for a bunch of guys like these or put themselves in the situations they get into. The actresses playing the roles are clearly too sophisticated in their style to be that thick ... or that desperate ... or that available.
Contrived, unrewarding, obvious, it gets one star for the picture quality, and a second for Ms.Breckin's body ... and, if you're male, once you've seen that, switch off the film and find something else to do, because that is the highlight. There's a bit in the DVD extras where the cast are asked if the sex scene was necessary - well, it's the most contrived part of the plot, the plot (as such) hinges around it, it's tame, it's unbelievable, and if you didn't get to see Ms.Breckin's opulent breasts, there would be nothing worth watching. And when a film comes down to that, you know it's lost the plot.
