In Heaven, which is Paris in Black and White, they speak in French; but Lola sings a song in Portuguese.
In Hell, the corporate machine, they speak British English. Even Gael Garcia Bernal has a bit of a Cockney accent. Understandable, as he studied in England for a time.
On Earth, being set in Spain, they speak Castilian Spanish.
But conspiratorially between the angels of heaven and hell, as well as in the courts where Manny's fate is decided, they speak in Latin. This alone caused both irony and comedic delight for me.
It wasn't at all what I expected. It had way too much shocking and graphic violence, and crass, nasty, down and dirty ugliness for my taste. It wasn't funny, clever, emotional, or engaging as with Almodovar. It just seemed exploitative of the women's beauty, and it had nothing else to offer. There were way too many ugly, nasty, dirty looking men. Ugh.
It was like expecting to go to a nice dinner date with delicious food, great company, and ambiance, and instead being treated to a nightmare at the morgue, on the way to Hell. I kind of saw it once, but it would be too depressing to watch it again. I even had to walk away several times, as it got boring, and uncomfortable for me to even sit through it the one time. Its probably going to be donated to charity eventually.
I highly recommend Almodovar's movies, though, "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," "VOLVER," "Talk to Her," "Broken Embraces," and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," are all super great, and I highly recommend them. As for this one, no. "Don't Tempt Me," was in no way tempting.
A confused angel has to save the soul of a rather bad character. The devil dispatches a knockout woman to do the same.
Deep plot twists as all of creation is in danger.
Very entertaining and at times fun.
