Jarrad Branthwaite says his goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool was the "best moment" of his Everton career.

The 21-year-old defender struck the Blues into the lead after 27 minutes of a memorable night at Goodison Park, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a second before the hour mark to double the Toffees’ advantage.

Speaking after the win, Branthwaite, quoted by the Liverpool ECHO, said: “There’s no better feeling than scoring a goal, especially in a Merseyside derby. I’m buzzing with that. I was watching it go over the line slowly and saw Dom slide in. It’s a good feeling and buzzing to get the win.

“I just hit it. It wasn’t the best finish and he nearly saved it, but they all count. You’ve got to be in the right place and keep it low.

“It’s a brilliant feeling, probably the best moment of my Everton career. We were the underdogs, and it was a massive result for us as a team and the fans. We had that setback at Chelsea and I think it shows our mentality to come back and win the next few games."

Full of praise for fellow goalscorer Calvert-Lewin, Branthwaite - still hungry for more Premier League points - added: “I’ve said all season that we know the quality Dom has got, and once he gets that confidence he’s going to score goals.

“The way he played tonight, his overall game, was just brilliant. A proper No.9 performance and I'm buzzing for him.

“It’s another step in the right direction but nothing is done yet. We’ll focus on the next game and try to keep picking up points between now and the end of the season.”

Coming off back-to-back victories, the Blues will be keen to carry their momentum into Saturday evening’s (5.30pm BST) home fixture against Brentford, while the visiting Bees could be without striker Ivan Toney.

The England international was absent from Brentford's 5-1 win against Luton Town last time out, missing the game due to a hip injury.

Speaking ahead of the game and quoted by the Liverpool World, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank said: “[Toney] is progressing, it is better, and I hope he is available for Saturday. There is still one more training.

“Ivan just loves to play football. He just wants to get out there and play. All footballers have that same feeling, and, of course, the Euros are coming up and that’s important. But he’s also aware that it’s important to be fit to go out and perform.”
