Box set compilation of Grace Jones first three albums for Island Records with bonus tracks: original 12", 7" and disco versions + unreleased instrumental versions.
Tracks 1-12 to 1-14, 2-11 to 2-14 and 3-13 are previously unreleased.
Track 2-9 is erroneously not the vocal version but a backing vocals only version. This error was corrected for new pressings of this box set (Grace Jones - Disco). Replacement discs were also issued by Universal.
Track 3-2 Suffer is erroneously omitted from tracklistings printed on back of box and on disc 3 but is listed in the booklet.

Great boxed set of the first 3 albums, complete with all the 12" mixes and instrumentals. Having said that, I'm a much bigger fan of her Compass Point era....- I purchased both the CD and Vinyl versions of this box set and must say it's almost perfect but not quite. I have to say I am happy to know I have the correct version of 2-9 on the CD with vocals by Grace and a not repeat of the instrumental version 2-12. I remember first hearing the Side 1 medley and I Need a Man from Portfolio at the Disco in Orlando when I first started going out. I remember purchasing the LP and how wonderful the gatefold artwork by Richard Bernstein was, especially the one with the leopard background. It baffles me why Fame and Muse both have their perspective gatefolds but Portfolio was left in the dust on both the CD and vinyl versions. Such a disappointment, but other than that I guess it's very well done. Nice having all the extra tracks on the CD version that weren't included with the vinyl.
- Anyone know which address to request a replacement disc 2, replacing the incorrect version?
Buy this for the audio alone. An essential Grace Jones collectable for sure (the remastered audio and rare mixes are simply to die for) and any official boxset in Grace's catalogue is a very welcome and overdue addition. But sloppy typos / copy, minor sequencing errors on the discs and frustratingly sloppy artwork adaptations prevent this being the truly wonderful compendium and collectable this forgotten era rightfully deserved.
The jewel case Gold Legion re-issues of 'Fame' and 'Muse' are far more aesthetically pleasing in terms of honouring the original LP designs. By removing all the text from the three digi-sleeves here, each album design looks painfully bare and incomplete. Plus poor 'Portfolio' is once again left with a frustratingly incomplete CD version thanks to the unforgivable omission of the beautiful original LP inner-gatefold artwork in this boxset edition. Why Island, WHY?!
Buyers who emailed Universal (myself included, around a month ago) were sent a replacement disc with the correct version of 2-9, regardless of point of purchase - though some reported being told to go their original vendor. As others mention, the boxes have since been replaced with the updated disc.- Edited 8 years agoIn the booklet and the press, everyone called this The Disco Years as opposed to the final, edited title DISCO on the box. I'm glad I chose the CD version. The vinyl box would be fab if the discs were red, blue, yellow...ah, no, just black. But only a handful of the extras printed on one 12" - is there a download code free with the vinyl box? Otherwise the buyer loses out on the other songs, and the box set is not cheap.

This CD box is a must have ! The music has been remastered by Kevin Reeves at Republic Studios in New York using the original master tapes. The sound is really fantastic. The bonus tracks are very good and very complete : 7" versions, instrumental versions, 12" versions... But nevertheless I can only give 4 stars. Why ? On the inside of the cover of 'Portfolio' the pictures are missing. The maxi version of 'Comme un oiseau qui s'envole' appears to be a version without the voice of Grace Jones. On the back of the box the song 'Suffer' isn't mentioned in the track list of the album 'Muse'. And it's regrettable that the lyrics are not included.- Track 2-9 is not the 12" disco version of " Comme Un Oiseau Qui S'envole" it is a backing vocals version with choruses, Grace Jones does not sing on it. This is a mistake.
That TB's moog solo is priceless on this proper remaster of the "surfer". Five stars!.
Track 2-9 is not identical to the instrumental verison 2-12 - as it features backing vocals.
