There's something weirdly hypnotic about watching catastrophes unfold onscreen. A number of recent disaster movies have portrayed the world - or parts of it - being destroyed in a multitude of ways. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves, and wildfires all take their toll. And then there's Geostorm, where just about every type of weather-related emergency happens at the same time. While many modern disaster movies are based in some sense of reality, others have more fantastical things wreaking havoc. Monsters, giant robots, and sharks all threaten mass destruction.

The appeal of the genre probably lies in the way it allows us to confront our fears in a safe way. Real-life calamities have tragically shown what's possible. Watching such events unfold in a movie lets us imagine ourselves in a devastating scenario and try to imagine what we would do to survive. The best new disaster films also have a strong human element. They aren't just about the disaster, they're also about how people come together in the face of great adversity.
