DICKINSON,JAMES LUTHER - Dinosaurs Run In Circles - Amazon.com Music
Jim Dickinson s third album in as many years is very much a stylistic departure from anything he s previously recorded in a music career that spans five decades. The legendary producer (Big Star, Replacements, Green On Red, Ry Cooder, Mudhoney, Alvin Youngblood Heart etc) and session man (Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Duane Allman) is to say the least, one of the most idionsyncratic artists of our time. Here he is joined only by the rhythm section of Sam Shoup (bass) and Tom Lonardo (drums) for an outing that celebrates his non-rock and roll roots.

as far as i'm concerned-jim dickinson, along with captain beefheart and alex chilton, who jim produced, was one of the unsung heroes of rock and roll. "dinosaurs run in circles," was jim's last offering to the masses, as he passed in 2009, not exactly sure of the date. anyway, jim had his own sense of rhythm and vocals which set his work apart from the rest of the crowd. it takes some getting used to-but, it's definitely rewearding in the end-sorta like tom waits' later efforts, but more idiosynchratic. jim usually did covers, always very tasty offerings. this time, we hear from the johnny mercer and louis jordan songbooks to name a few, he even covers, "when you wish upon a star!" all done in classic jim dickinson form. his backing band for this outing was very sparse, just standup bass and drums. this is jim's most mainstream outing. maybe, as a result, it was fitting that it was his last. look back to "dixie fried," mudboy and the neutrons!, or "free beer tomorrow," if you want classic jim dickinson. always sounding maybe a little drunk, these albums remain forever on my turntable or cd player. i'd have to say, mudboy and the neutrons, "known felons in drag," remains my favorite-it rocks like a house on fire! back to "dinosaurs-" there's fast numbers, slow one's like ray charles' "hard times" and somebody's "the gypsy," all done in classic dickinson style, with tasty accompaniment. any music by jim is worth investigating and savoring over, the more you lasten, the more you like it. in short, "dinosaurs run in circles," is a great cd, so is anything by the man. check him out.
sadly this is Jim's last album. He died recently. It's the music of an elder southern gentleman with all the roots he had. It's no new Sound or something like that, You remember "Spectrum meets Captain Memphis - Indian Giver", which thrilled me for it's ruff sound. On the last album all is smoothy and oldfashioned. IT's a nice last statement of Jim Dickinson.
Going to the well is how you find the good water. Buy Jim Dickinson's music, and drink deep and long, and you'll feel what I mean. His UbuRoi-ness irony was always the hallmark of what makes him very different.
Stripped down to a trio, Jim enjoys himself with this collection of well chosen covers. A bit rough and ready but none the worse for it. You either 'get' Jim or you don't. If you do, you'll love this.
