Digital Electronics: Basics & Definition

💡
Key learnings:
  • Digital Electronics Definition: Digital electronics is defined as the field of engineering that studies and applies digital or discrete signals as opposed to analog signals.
  • Core Concepts: Basics such as number systems and logic circuits are essential for understanding more complex digital electronic systems.
  • Logic Gates: These are the building blocks of digital circuits, each type (AND, OR, NOT, etc.) having specific functions demonstrated through truth tables and diagrams.
  • Binary Arithmetic: Understanding operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in binary is crucial for digital system designs.
  • Practical Applications: Digital electronics underpin various applications from consumer electronics to sophisticated military systems, highlighting their broad relevance.

What is Digital Electronics?

There are two main types of signals: analog (continuous) and digital (discrete). The study of these in engineering is known as Analog and Digital Electronics. Digital electronics, in particular, are crucial due to their extensive applications from industrial systems to communication technologies and military equipment. The main and perhaps the most revolutionary advantage of digital electronics is the decrease in size and the improvement in technology.

We have chosen to discuss various topics of Digital Electronics from the very fundamentals of this subject such as Number systems, logic circuits going deep into those topics, like discussing various types of number systems, which we should use and how, inter relation among those number systems to the somewhat tougher concepts of Digital Electronics like TTL, PMOS-NMOS logic, Flip Flops etc. to get an idea about the whole subject.

All topics are illustrated with diagrams, designs, tables, and examples to ensure clarity. They are structured to provide a fundamental understanding initially, with further reading deepening technical knowledge.

Now let us inform you what we have included in the topics of Digital Electronics, as we have already discussed we have started from the very basic topics of Digital Electronics like Number system. Then we have discussed the extension of number system like various types of number system, interrelation among different types of number systems making oneself absolutely comfortable with the fundamentals of Number system.

We then explore the crucial areas of Binary Arithmetic and Boolean algebra in detail, covering operations from binary addition, binary subtraction, binary multiplication and binary division, alongside the fundamentals of Boolean algebra.

Following this, we discuss various coding systems like ASCII code, Gray Code, Hamming code that simplify input and output formats. We also delve into different types of logic gatesAND gate, OR gate, NOT gate, NAND gate, NOR gate, EX-OR gate—using detailed diagrams, explanations, and truth tables for clearer understanding.

These may be classified as the fundamentals of Digital Electronics without which the subject cannot be understood at all. So after discussing about them we have gone deep into the subject. Topics like TTL, Logic Families, various MOS gates, Flip Flops (J-K, D, T etc.) have been discussed.

We introduce digital electronics on our Electrical Engineering website because today’s engineering disciplines are interconnected, and knowledge of digital electronics is crucial for electrical engineers. If you’d like to learn more about electronics, check out our basic electronics questions.
