In a statement on social media, Diego wrote a heartfelt message to himself in 1997 (when he first started embarking on his football journey) confirming that this season will be his last.

Many others flocked to social media to praise Diego, including Flamengo midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta who wrote: “What a privilege to be part of your successful career, captain, gratitude above all for the moments lived and many teachings, you will surely leave a legacy for this whole new generation.”

Diego’s final game for Flamengo will be against Avaí on 13 November.
