An iconic elephant that lived at the Tsavo East National Park for over 60 years has passed on.

The demise was confirmed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Dida's final bow

The state agency announced the elephant, identified as Dida, a matriarch of Tsavo, had rested.

"We are saddened by the death of Dida, who was possibly Africa's largest female Tusker and a Matriarch residing in Tsavo East National Park. She died from natural causes due to old age, having lived a full life to about 60-65 years old," KWS said.

In a statement, KWS described Dida as an iconic matriarch of Tsavo and a great repository of many decades of knowledge.

"She shepherds her herd through many seasons and challenging times. She served as the subject of various documentaries and an iconic tourist attraction. Those who got to know her through pictures and videos and those who had the exquisite pleasure of meeting her in person will remember her. Rest Well, Dida," the statement further read.

Tsavo mourns Dida

The park, while mourning Dida, said it had suffered the loss of a best-loved matriarch and the greatest repository of many decades worth of knowledge.

"Dida'the matriarch died naturally of old age. To us, allowing an elephant to live its full life is something we are very proud of," Tsavo said in a statement.

Meru's rare spectacle

This came when TUKO.co.ke reported that severe drought being experienced in most parts of the country threatens humans and wildlife.

Apart from human beings, wild animals are impacted by a crisis fast becoming one of hunger, thirst and disease.

Residents of Mukungu-Ncoroibori village in Meru were recently treated to a rare spectacle after they helplessly watched an elephant die due to starvation.

Some of them could be seen filming the animal while some conversed in their local dialect.
