9 takeaways from Bills’ Sean McDermott’s end of season presser
The Buffalo Bills have put the finishing touches on their 2023 season with locker cleanout day.
Players, coaches, and the entire organization laid out their final thoughts and the season that was and looked forward to the future. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott was included amongst this bunch.
With that, here are nine takeaways from McDermott’s end of season presser:
Don't expect wholesale changes
Can the Bills run it back? McDermott thinks so.
“This is not a situation where you strip it down to the studs and start all over,” he said. “Every year is a challenge to figure out how to put it back together again to put yourself in position to win.”
His philosophy on offense
A quote stood out during Sean McDermott's season ending presser about his offensive philosophy: "I cut my teeth around Andy Reid who is a pass first, you throw to win and that has been my philosophy since day 1 especially since Josh has grown into the player and QB that he has." pic.twitter.com/Uz7fDOEYNE

Sounds like the Hyde-Poyer duo could be over
Bills coach Sean McDermott, reflecting on the safety duo of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, said he thought while driving into the Chiefs game it was nice to play at home because it presented "one last time for these two to run out of the tunnel again and hear their names called." pic.twitter.com/l3ejIEuq5I

Message to Kaiir Elam
A former first-round pick of the team, cornerback Kaiir Elam need to perform better. McDermott’s wants consistency:
Sean McDermott on 2nd-year CB Kaiir Elam: "He has flashed. Now what we've got to get a better feel for can he do that on a consistent basis. … Just overall, he needs to continue to up his game, quite honestly, and we'll see how we factor that into what we're doing defensively."

Baking Tyler Bass
Tyler Bass and his missed kick against the Kansas City Chiefs was a bummer. He’s still got the backing of the Bills coach:
Sean McDermott on Bills kicker Tyler Bass: "I am confident in Tyler."
Adds: "I'm very confident he's going to down what's necessary this offseason to get himself right."— katherine fitzgerald (@kfitz134) January 23, 2024
How do the Bills stay healthy?
Sometimes it’s something you can’t control. Injuries happen in sports. But McDermott is hoping to make changes which will make sure less happen in 2024. They really sunk Buffalo’s Super Bowl dreams:
McDermott: we will examine why we haven’t been able to go into the postseason as healthy as possible. Thats important. That’s happened each of the last two seasons. We look at everything and that’s one thing that will be examined. #Bills

Von coming back?
No sacks for Von Miller in 2023? No problem… at least in terms of his future. Sounds like he’ll be back:
Sean McDermott on Von Miller: "What I believe that I saw was his best game was the last game of the season. … My hope is that that is a good direction for where we pick up next season. … Do I wish he was healthier through the course of the season? Absolutely."

Josh and the OC
Quarterback Josh Allen will help pick the offensive coordinator, per McDermott. Joe Brady is still currently considered the interim.
Sean McDermott said Josh Allen has a "big" influence on the OC decision. Said it's ultimately his own decision, but Allen's opinion matters.
