Product Description
1986: East Germany is broke, Perestroika is real, terrorism plagues Europe, the AIDS crisis intensifies and the struggle against apartheid rages on. Banished for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch wallows in limbo until his Aunt Lenora conscripts him into her plan to drum up hard currency abroad. They set off on an adventure through Africa, Western Europe and finally home to East Germany. Can mafioso-style Capitalism save Communism just in the nick of time

I've just finished watching it again. I bumped my rating to 4 stars. Except for the things I mentioned, it really is quite good. I encountered the East German police and border guards numerous times, while I was stationed in Germany as a member of the US Intelligence community in the 1980's. The East German authorities were not nice people. They were high strung, abusive martinets serving a system predicated on evil. The fact that tens of thousands of ex Stasi people, border guards and People's Police are drawing pensions right now is nauseating.
Can't wait for '89!
You don't need to see 83 to enjoy 86, but it sets the scene for the schism between Martin, his family and the HVA.
The final episode with the American Embassy hosting all the Stasi agents for a "show" was just hilarious and an oddly fitting folly to all that's come before. A real "Time Warp."
