Product Description
In Steven Spielberg's first full-length movie, Duel, a traveling salesman (Dennis Weaver) is harassed by a menacing 40-ton truck on a remote desert highway. Brilliant in its simplicity, the cult favorite takes road rage to a dangerous level as the traveler and the mysterious truck-driver are pitted against one another in a motorized duel to the death. Gripping with psychological tension, this desperate battle for survival is hailed by critics as a film that "belongs on the classics shelf reserved for top suspensers" (Daily Variety).

I first saw "Duel" in around 1972 on ABC as one of their movies of the week. I was mesmerized and thrilled by the relentlessness of the film; I was on the edge of my seat for all 90 minutes! Talk about road rage!
"Duel" was Steven Spielberg's first full-length film, a 'made-for-TV' movie starring Dennis Weaver (from 'Gunsmoke' and 'McCloud'), about David Mann, a mild-mannered middle-class traveling salesman being terrorized by the aggressive driver of an 18-wheeler, and how Mann (note the name!) responds during the 90 minutes of hair-raising terror. The original TV version was 74 minutes minus ads. Since ABC decided to release it theatrically in Europe, they added about 15 minutes of "filler" to get it to just under 90 minutes. The "filler" does not adversely affect the white-knuckle thriller, and adds a telephone scene with his wife (Jacqueline Scott of "Fugitive" tv series) that displays Mann's demure, passive husband/wife relationship , at odds with the challenge of facing potential violence threatened by the Peterbilt truck driver (whom we never see). Also, some mild cussing was thrown in to make it seem more realistic for movie theater audiences.
The picture quality is excellent in restored high definition and in widescreen (it was originally shot in 35mm 1.33:1 ratio).
There are excellent bonus videos, including Spielberg discussing the filming process and how he fought to get it filmed on location instead of in a sound stage with tacky process backgrounds (to save money of course). Also there is a spot with Richard Matheson, who wrote the original novelette published in 'Playboy' magazine, and the screenplay. Matheson wrote many screenplays for 'Twilight Zone', including the famous "Nightmare at 20,000 Ft." with William Shatner.
My only 'criticism' is that Universal didn't include the original 74-minute version. Fortunately, for the serious fan, a new 4K UHD Blu-ray is being released in November 2023 that will include a Blu-ray HD print of the 74-minute TV version, in 1.33:1 standard tube-tv ratio.
Spielberg credits his work on "Duel" as being the film that propelled him from directing TV show into making feature films. What a debut!
We never see the trick driver's face but his big-rig truck doing battle with Weaver's sedan (which is match for this huge truck) on the deserted highway is what most of this intense film is all about.
Can Weaver survive the endless attacks on he and his car from this frighteningly large and powerful big-rig? Can he somehow actually defeat this monster on the road?
Watch this terrifying film to find out.
It is easy to see how the still very young Spielberg was helmed to direct Jaws after he was able to turn a diesel truck into a monster as frightening as the shark in Jaws needed to be.
This film helped skyrocket Spielberg from a teenaged television director into a major motion picture director.
The 4K Blu-ray looks surprisingly good, but the new sound mix (back when I saw Dual for the first time the sound was only in mono) was the biggest surprise of all for me. The surround is astoundingly expansive with all of the sounds of the road really coming to life in a sound track that leaves the original mono sound track literally in the dust!
I wasn't expecting this disc to look and sound as good as it does. What a treat!
A real cinematic experience that any Spielberg fan should love, Dual on 4K Blu-ray comes very highly recommended.
The cinema version is actually better, is not cropped like the original TV movie, and matches well to the normal 16:9 ratio of TV's today. Unlike many old TV shows projected on many Smart TVs that do not have menu settings to insure old TV shows are shown in their original squarish format, this movie is neither cropped, nor does everyone look like they have a fat head.
There are also some interesting background features on the disk.
