      Critics Consensus

Given primal verve by John Boorman's unflinching direction and Burt Reynolds' star-making performance, Deliverance is a terrifying adventure.

KB B This was such a compelling, intense movie. It was so controversial 50 yrs ago when it premiered. it's definitely worth the watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Olson K Watched on 02/06/2024 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Gill S We all know what happens in this film, but I was still engaged in this story that was ultimately man vs nature. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Gemma R Solid movie with solid performances from the cast. Makes for some uncomfortable viewing at times, but that's a sign the movie has done its job. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/23 Full Review Justin T This is a canoeing adventure that goes very wrong. There is not much in the way of blood and guts so the interest and fear comes from the situation that the adventurers found themselves in. It is scary to think that it would be possible for this sort of thing to happen and that you may be stuck up the creek injured and without a hope. It is worth watching as a late night thinking thriller. Not too memorable unlike the similar concept of Straw Dogs (1971) which is far better and much more memorable. Still a fraught and stressful experience that has the legendary banjo scene! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/23 Full Review Dave S Rich in challenging themes and unthinkable moral dilemmas, John Boorman's Deliverance is the harrowing story of four men who embark on an ill-conceived canoe trip down a treacherous river in northern Georgia, confronted by dangerous rapids and unimaginable horror throughout their journey. Filled with meaningful dialogue (‘Sometimes you have to lose yourself before you can find anything') and iconic moments (the spirited Dueling Banjos scene), Deliverance is an adventure movie like no other, a film that cemented Burt Reynolds star status and confirmed the considerable talent of Jon Voight. On top of the star power, Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography is stellar throughout, especially the shallow focus shots early in the movie. While not always easy to watch, it is a movie that needs to be seen. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Derek Malcolm Guardian It is also a finely structured allegory about America and Americans. But at least it works properly on a more basic level. It’s good to watch, and then to think about. Sep 28, 2022 Full Review Glenn Kenny Decider The movie casts a spell through images both ugly and beautiful, and other sounds, none of them really reflecting the idea of "nature in harmony." All here is dissonance, and the best one can do is find a thread of consolation within. Apr 9, 2019 Full Review TIME Magazine Each of the four lead performances is exceptional, none more so than Burt Reynolds' beefy, supercilious Lewis. Aug 24, 2008 Full Review David Elliott Chicago Daily News It is not meant to be "liked," and in a sense I didn't like it at all, but that made its power and control all the more convincing, and I greatly admire the film's single-minded intensity. Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Anchored by some solid performances, strong direction, and a sharp aesthetic, “Deliverance” creates an atmosphere as threatening as it is beautiful and throws it’s characters right in the middle of it. Rated: 4/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Deliverance is a classic film that nonetheless isn’t in the same league as poet James Dickey’s first (and only great) full-length fiction, a work as perfect in its way as, say, The Great Gatsby...
