Sean Hannity has vowed to engage in a peaceful protest if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration follows through and bans Juul e-cigarettes over concerns that the product is too appealing to underage users.
On Wednesday evening, the Fox News host reacted to an update from colleague Trace Gallagher about the anticipated FDA action by declaring that “They ban it, and I’ll do it live on TV, and they can come and arrest me. How’s that?”
Back in March 2021, Hannity was caught vaping on the air when he thought the show was in a commercial break. A similar behind-the-scenes vaping video emerged in September 2017.
Citing the Wall Street Journal as the source, Gallagher told Hannity the feds will order Juul “to remove its e-cigarettes completely from the U.S. marketplace.”
Gallagher continued: “Back in 2018, the FDA and others started blaming Juul’s hip advertising and fruity flavors for a surge in underage vaping. Juul has been trying to get on the right side of regulators by limiting its marketing and banning mango mint and other sweet flavors. The company even suggested a vaping device that can only be unlocked if you’re 21. Apparently, the FDA was not swayed…considering the U.S. is [Juul’s] biggest market, this will be devastating.”
The FNC correspondent noted, however, that the FDA apparently will allow competitors Reynolds American and NJOY to continue to sell tobacco-flavored devices.
At the beginning of the segment on his eponymous show, Hannity wondered: “What about adults? So, okay, we’re gonna legalize weed, we’ll legalize drugs, we’ll sell cigarettes, the government makes a fortune on cigarettes, but we’ll put a prohibition on adult vaping — prohibition there.”
According to the aforementioned Wall Street Journal: “The FDA could announce its decision as early as this week…The marketing denial order would follow a nearly two-year review of data presented by the vaping company, which sought authorization for its tobacco- and menthol-flavored products to stay on the U.S. market. Uncertainty has clouded Juul since it landed in the FDA’s sights four years ago, when its fruity flavors and hip marketing were blamed for fueling a surge of underage vaping. The company since then has been trying to regain the trust of regulators and the public. It limited its marketing and in 2019 stopped selling sweet and fruity flavors.”
Outlining possible remedies, the WSJ noted that “Juul could pursue an appeal through the FDA, challenge the decision in court or file a revised application for its products.”
“Juul can appeal the decision, or revise its application for products, but of those take a bunch of time and a whole lot of money,” Gallagher similarly asserted about the company’s options.
Hannity punctuated the discussion by observing that “Now, while the Biden FDA wants people to stop vaping, many Democratic-run cities and states, they have no problem decriminalizing even hard drugs, even as overdose deaths are spiking.”
The Gallagher segment also provided more information about the Uvalde, Texas, police response failure during the horrific Robb Elementary School shooting and that local officials have now placed the school district police chief on administrative leave.
