William L Amitabh Bachchan dressing like Pacino's Scarface, rolling up like Denzel's Frank Lucas, and kicking ass like Roundtree's Shaft. If Deewaar wanted to seriously pit the streetwise vs the idealistic in a tumultuous India, they shouldn't have made crime seem so cool. Though considered to be something of a spiritual successor to such films as Mother India, which is heavily allegorical and focuses on the radical social changes that the country was undergoing on a national level, Deewaar leans more contemporary and is less immediately convincing. The over-the-top fight choreography (which includes a WWE-style toss out of a window) and musical components are real drags on the story, but Salim-Javed and Chopra take the crucial step of making Bachchan's Vijay convincing and empathetic - raised in unjust circumstances and rightfully bitter, his fall to a life of crime is not without justification, transitioning from a champion of worker's rights to an enforcer in order to gain the status that was robbed of him by the greed of others. In contrast, Kapoor's Ravi, as Vijay's brother and ehtical mirror, is far less nuanced, less well-explored, and serves more as an excessively righteous representation of how the youth of then-India should be, a Boy Scout. If you're asking the audience to choose between the pair, the 'wrong' choice often seems like the right one. Though considered a classic by many fans of Hindi film, often using some slick gangster elements, and featuring solid performances from many well-regarded Indian actors of the 1970s (particularly Bachchan), the lack of moral depth in a film that attempts to sell itself on difficult choices is noteworthy. Given the heavy influences of blaxploitation films of just a few years prior, it's not out of line to call this a thriller with elements of both nationalist sentiment and exploitation. However, it had some sweet costumes and cheesy plot to boot. It was on youtube. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Poverty and injustice overcast the fate of this family. Nevertheless our life should be dictated by the choice we make and not by the shadow that cast upon us. Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Yash Chopra, Salim-Javed, and Amitabh Bachchan changed the face of the Hindi film.
