SARATOGA SPRINGS - The owners of 65 and 69 Phila St. have again pulled their request to demolish the houses from the Design Review Committee meeting agenda. The committee was set to review the request at its Feb. 10 meeting.
The fate of the two houses, both built in the 1850s, has drawn the attention of neighbors and the city at large. The houses have been unoccupied since the late 1990s and are in need of significant repair. The principals of Helen Case LLC, the company that owns the properties, want to knock them down and build new houses there. Dozens of city residents have spoken against the request.
Samantha Bosshart, executive director of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, has said the buildings are salvageable and the city should not continue to allow the owners to neglect them.
Helen Simpson and Case Simpson are due in City Court Feb. 11 to face charges they have broken city ordinances having to do with property upkeep.
The demolition application has been pushed to the March 3 Design Review Committee meeting.
